I want to try a small scale chicken coop. I just want to learn the basics and see how productive I can be and see if it is indeed worth it. Does anyone else have chickens? I want to have fresh eggs. Im tired of eating so much from the store.

I have a lot of experience with chickens. I understand their language. So feel free to ask anything.

How productive you can be...? Well it depends. Do you have a coop and fence? You can do it without fence if the conditions are right. But most importantly, what free food sources do you have for them? Do you have a lot of left overs/wasted food from your household? Land where they can find food? And how long is the winter where you live?

Then about the rest of the food where can you get it? Do you produce grains? Can you buy it in bulk from a local farmer? That's much cheaper than having to go to some store, that's usually very expensive.

It's more about the cat's experience. When a mother hen is defending her young she's a fearless opponent, and after getting attacked once or twice the cat will have respect for chickens.

chicken coops are fucking disgusting. i used to have to collect the eggs as part of my chores when i was a kid. also, everything and it's brother is going to try to get in and kill the chickens so your going to need a dog to keep by the coop.

if i had a farm yea i would probably have one again. but just realize how much of a pain in the ass they are to clean.

House-sat for somebody this summer that had 9 hens. Was a pain in the ass.
You have to be the very morning to let them out and feed them and then be their at dusk to put them away for the night. Nothing like scheduling your life around animals. I was also surprised to learn that in the long run, getting your own eggs was not that cheap. They ate a lot of feed--had to feed them twice a day.

yea i have no idea why people raise small amounts of chickens. the coop i used to tend every day as a kid probably had 50 chickens. it was atleast 10x10 with 2 levels of nests.

the only think worse than gathering the eggs is plucking those bastards.

True, you can arrange it so it's less of a problem but yes.

Two things: Free food will be the main part of their diet(making the hens basically free), and you probably only need a couple of eggs per day, and don't want to go through the hassle of slaughter.

If you're going to let them forage look into a solar panel+dusk/dawn timer to operate a small hatch in the door. This way you don't have to let them out at dawn/in at dusk. Chickens are surprisingly punctual.

Small operations are possible. Free range chicken is best chicken. Free food, exercise, happy chickens. I've even seen them eat mice before. No roaming for these gals though. Bird flu is to scary.

Hens are only productive for 2 years and then the laying slacks off big time and they can live for 10 years. So unless you intend to run a home for old chickens you'll have to kill them.

I love my chickens so much. I've loved chickens since I was little, they have so much personality and make such great pets. But, unless you have a good bit of land/money/time, all they'll really be are pets. They lay eggs, but usually not enough to sell off if they are just backyard chickens.

This is what roosters are for. They can be some tough ass birds. I don't think most people understand how mean they can be when they are protecting their ladies.

depends on the breed and conditions. I had some of my girls lay for 5 years. The production rate certainly slowed down to the point of not being economical to buy feed, but 2 years is the bottom end of the scale

Its not to terribly difficult to have chickens, keeping the coop/run safe from predators is the hard part, and sadly it can be a trial/error process.

They eat anything tho, which is super cool.

Also, get a rooster just for kicks: those fuckers are hilarious

They were overfilled with eggs like that you don't even know. Also you have to find the eggs if you let your chickens ever out, and where you usually find them would be along bushes or very good places for them to hide their eggs.

Also if you let your chickens out, they will probably get murdered. The guy I knew had his chickens murdered by racoons or whatever. Chickens will get murdered by almost any animal.

I had chickens when I was a kid and they were a ton of fun. At one point we had about 25. I'm not sure on the other breeds but I know the majority were bantee(spelling?) and Rhode Island Reds. The biggest problem we had were raccoons generally. One night they killed three of my mom's favorites. Also, a brown bear broke in to the coop's yard and ate the feed. He didn't bother with the chickens, just the feed. Also, no onions preferably if you're going to eat the eggs.
