Winter is coming in the US and where I live it's been 50F-55F for the last two weeks, and I had no winters clothes.

Ordered some carhartt flannels, and if anyone wants to order some shit from the clearance part of their website. type in the coupon thing in the cart "EXTRA25" for 25% more off. (I.E. 18$ flannel instead of 42$ ones)

What are some nice pants to wear in the winter?
Suggested winter clothing brands?

Well what I do is that I just buy long johns to wear under normal pants and for me thats good for no matter how low it goes. Basicly only time I need something special is if I plan to stand in the could for long period of time, if I move (walk, hike etc) I need nothing more than that and its get crispy where I'm at (-20 for days with peaks to - 30). And I use kinda soft shell waterproof pants to wear over all that if it rains heavy.
Just layer and you're fine. Long johns are the shit.

I've used fleece-lined tights for winter /out/ing. They work well as a layer because they're slim fitting and it's really comfy as fuck. I have a pair of "thermal" pants but they're shit, might be because they're cheap but I don't know. The fleece lined tights work better than they do and they're about 6 bux. Just the tights alone are warm down to 20-30F. Not windproof though.

Have columbia weather resistant pants for external layer, getting their first use this weekend. Midlayer will probably be these "Coldpruf" pants I just got, or the running pants I was using, They're almost as warm as the fleece tights but more waterproof and durable. Climbed a tree in them and the fabric didn't fray at all from the bark. Also have thrifted snowpants for when it's super fuggin cold.

Wool socks.

Undershirt/thermal, carhartt flannel, a hoodie with that white fluffy lining, carhartt canvas jacket.

Hat, two pairs of gloves. Boots.

Question: would it be retarded to use a space blanket under my sleeping bag as a ground layer?

Also have a flannel and white fluffy shit blanket as a ground. Then down subzero mummy bag with a wool blanket inside.

That being said, if your mummy bag and whatnot is warm and actually retains heat, what benefit would you get from trying to reflect that heat back onto you? Would it be worth it?

Get a real windproof/water proof shell, those Carhartt jackets are good unless its wet cause they absorb water somewhat also they dont particularly interface that well with other layers which leads to snow down back or pants and not very air tight.
(just my experience)

How do I go innawoods for extended periods of time without freezing to death? I can already make fires in rain/snow/sleet/snowrain, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Post a pic of it, if it's the standard issue norwegian military wool shirts I can confirm that they are heaven on earth and a true lifesaver in the field.

Best used layered with as:
1. mesh baselayer,
2. wool shirt+long johns,
3. 600g (mil wool jacket),
4. windproof shell

Good for temps down to about -25, below that you want the norwegian "anna"-insulating pants and a thicker outer layer.

Also break apart super easily if dried in a dryer, so don't do that.
It comes in navy btw if army green is too paramil for your style.

Why worry about winter clothing? 50F is still t-shirt temperature unless you're a girl (55F is female t-shirt temp).
If you expect proper winter, buy wool. Icebreaker 200+ weight merino is great
Norrona is the shit, but is a bit expensive.
Patagonia has some good jackets and pants, fair prices for what you get.

This will provide zero insulation from mother earth. Get some kind of insulated pad or use some natural insulation (anything to get you off the ground).

For genuine winter camping (on snow or below freezing temps), some type of mattress / insulation is pretty much essential.

General rule of thumb is to have at least R-5 of insulation between you and the ground. Insulation is additive so you can either have one thicker mattress or layer some thinner ones.

A foam pad + air mat is the most common combo for mountaineers, because foam both helps to protect the air mattress and gives you at least some level of indestructible fallback if your air mattress does fail.

The lightest single-mat cold weather solution that I have used is a Thermarest NeoAir XTherm.

Get rid of them and buy a pair of 2-piece adjustable poles.

When hiking your poles should be adjusted based on your terrain - you shorten them going uphill, lengthen going downhill, and you may even use one short/one long when traversing.

Fixed poles are more of a skiing thing.

Ouch. I'll think about that price point. Thank you for the explanation, though. I looked up R values, and apparently the best bang for my buck would be some cardboard with R3-R4. Good to know. I'll see what cash I can drum up by winter.

a tight pair of fleece/silicone gloves for dexterity
a large pair of wool mittens
2 pairs of wool socks

all of this under
wool pants under a pair of 5.11 tactical pants for wind resistance
heavy LL Bean maine guide wool jacket

i work in -40C industrial blast freezers working with steel all day, i never get cold at work or winter camping. come fite me faggots.

I stand in -9c for hours and hours, I get by with fleece lined craghoppers with thermal long johns under (if I get really cold I have some long johns that are like women's tights that go under).
The rest of my body doesn't need much as my legs are heating me up. I usually get by with thermal vest, tee, jumper and ski jacket.
Always gloves as I have rauynards.

Innawoods I take handwarmers so if I can't get a fire started I can throw a few in my sleeping bag.

Probably overkill but I really feel the cold (usually <10%bf)

Man it's really interesting how different people are. In the winter (-10 to +-0) it often go outside in nothing but a tshirt and jacket with zero insulation I don't get cold, sweat often. My body does the rest. When I'm /out/ I take my warm clothes though.

My theory is it is down to muscle mass, when I was at my biggest I had to have my house freezing and would constantly be hot. Now I have lost most of it I struggle to stay warm and have to go out of my way to heat up. I often have hot showers just to take the edge off the cold or to reheat after prolonged cold

I've tried several types over the years and here's my thoughts:

-cotton flat: least warm but better than nothing
-cotton waffled: more warm but basically the baseline standard for me
-synthetic flat: maybe similar to cotton waffled but better for physical activities like winter sports for wicking moisture
-wool: extremely warm but I get way too hot and sweat in them
-fleece: warmest (pretty similar to wool though) and good for intermediate physical activities, rarely sweat in them.

I deal with average winter temps of about -20C/-4F

the fleece works well enough to about 10C/50F. Warmer than that and I overheat.

I use acrylic/wool blended socks.

with fleece, it has very similar characteristics to wool generally. But it dries faster. This guy did some tests for comparison. You see both dry and wet wool and fleece are virtually identical in heat retention characteristics.

Cabela's Camo Cross 3.5mm Rubber Trail Boots. I just got them, but so far I really like them. Very comfortable, good tread, and waterproof. It'll be interesting to see how well they do this winter.

I bring chillies to wear at night, a fleece and a wool sweater, rain jacket, hat , gloves, and extra socks.

The extra layer between you and the groundfor sleeping is really important. If you don't have a thick sleeping pad, bulk it up or get a new one because that will drain your body temp real fast and you'll have a shitty nights sleep.

As for sleeping bags, I have two (just a new and an old) both rated around 20-30, and I layer them and am fine. I've also simply brought an extra a quilt to put over my bag and been okay.

I love winter camping though, and def recommend going for it. It is so secluded, and nothing like a fire in deep snow, it's just great.

Ah sorry, they're just long johns. The brand everyone bought when I was coming up was "chillis" and they just became known as that, but they are just thin fleece long johns.
