Why scandi grind? Mora is for cutting wood. For food you'll want full flat grind.

There is no such thing as scandi grinded kitchen knife. If all you do with a knife is food processing, a Mora is a absolutely wrong tool for the job.

I only have a discontinued SEAL 2000 and while it's good quality, the design is pretty poor. There are just soooo many better options

If you already have one, then take it and try, but you wont be pleasantly surprised if you have tried more stuff before.

SOG is pretty shit nowadays, worse than Cold Steel and close to Mtech in designs.

You don't need to blow that kind of cash on something you won't in all real practical sense need. But alas, this is the downfall of outdoorsmen everywhere. The person who posted the part about the mora was right. Why? Because in all real practical senses you won't NEED a knife like that. You could apply that extra money to an improvement on your gear that you probably need to do anyway seeing as you're contemplating a fighting knife as a knife to take trekking. But it is your decision and will do everything you need it to on your trip. But it's really not worth what you pay for it. Happy hiking.

Finished my PCT thru recently. Personally, find a lightweight knife for food prep (previously stated). If you are actually going thru, then you need to streamline your setup around the walking/hiking aspect of the journey, and being comfortable while churning out miles means being light. You're going to learn SO much in the beginning, so keep your ears open, but there is also plenty of noise to funnel through. Happy trails.

If I'm out for 24hours+ then I carry a small gerber or kershaw folding knife, a pathfinder knife to do said tasks, and a letherman multitool.

The knife in the middle is exactly like the one I took when I did that trail back in 1993, it's still in a pack buried under a ton of crap in the garage, you don't need to spend a ton of money on a knife, the guy I was with had a Buck 119 and it worked just fine, I'd say take a Mora or a Buck.

When you take a look at the types of knives people who really do go out into the wilderness use then they all pretty much tend to follow the Mora blade design in terms of size and shape, the grinds might differ but not much else does.

I prefer a fixed blade too, I've seen to many people cut themselves with a folding knife while trying to close it, we had to cut a hike short a few years back when a guy with us cut himself closing a SAK, it cut him to the bone and needed stitches.

What I can't stand about folders is how dirty and uncleanable they get when you manipulate food.

The gunk inside is disgusting to an unimaginable level.

Only for that I always discard them. The only folder I'd take is the one on my multitool, and never for use with food.

I have one in vg10 but they've gone up in price lately.

I think Fallkniven is one of the very few brands that sell you stuff that is actually worth the price.

They're very good, so you should have no problem if you buy a second hand one, if you can find it.

Perfectly.

I do not use any other knives, save for a Spyderco, but also vg10.

You never have to sharpen it (convex geometry helps) and when you do, you just have to strop it some on some leather.

If the edge is blunt (never happened to me yet) you just have to use a smooth stone (I use Fallkniven's DC4) four times or so.

I've had this knife for a few years now, its always my go-to. I also carry a multitool in the side pouch. Never had an issue with it, I use it near salt water, and sometimes it's been fully submerged, blade stays sharp and the salt does take a bit of a toll, but its easily cleaned.
I payed around 20 bucks for it; worth every penny.

When I go out it's usually into the Maine wilderness for weeks at a time. I usually bring the mtech, the multitool, and a folding edc knife, as well as a hatched. the mtech might be a little too heavy duty, but I do really enjoy using it, it works well for fileting fish, skinning animals, cutting wood. It supplements my hatchet really well, and the sheath fits onto my molle backpack really nicely. For trail hiking I usually just bring my folding edc.

forgot to mention, I also camp on the shoreline in the spring/summer, when I do I bring this knife pretty much solely to cut bait for surf fishing, cuts bones like butter, super easy to clean and the salt water hasn't done fuck all to the knife [the sheath grommets have a bit of rust, but that's to be expected]
