In this thread we shall discuss, in a broad scope, the subject of fishing. We will discover the methods through which the modern fisherman attempts to make his catch. We may also share stories of our own struggles and successes upon the waters of our world. From the old timer with the cane pole and can of earthworms to the bass fisher with his vast assortment of rods and artificial lures, we will delve deep into the psyche of the fisherman. In learning about the fisherman, about the ageless instinct that drives his desire for a catch, we may ultimately learn something more about ourselves. Without any further ado, let us discuss... Depending on your location you might have less even luck that I did. Unless there are nearby bodies of water (neighbourhood ponds, canals, etc) that house fish those retention ponds aren't likely to have fish in them. If they do it would be due to a few possibilities. They may have been intentionally and legally introduced as a means of controlling pests like mosquitoes, they may have been introduced illegally by another fisherman as a means of creating a fishing hole, or they may have found their way there on their own when high water/flood conditions created a temporary path from a nearby body of water.

Around here the majority of retention ponds are usually created to slow run-off and make up for the absorption no longer provided by the trees/grass that were once present. A few feed into or are fed by local watersheds and conditions have occurred where they were able to naturally develop fish populations. Many however are devoid of fish. Neighbourhood retention ponds are often even stocked and open to the public (or at least the immediate community). The ponds in shopping centres not so much. It isn't uncommon for those to be fenced off. I'm not too keen on property laws but a fence seems like an unwritten "No Trespassing" sign but if there is no actual sign the worst that'll probably happen is you'll get asked to leave.

As for private property and licensing (>>615170) some states still require you to have a freshwater license in order to fish on private property. It's worth checking regulations to be sure before fishing a pond in the back of some business park unlicensed. Last thing you need is a passing by officer fining you.

Beginner here. Been pond fishing for rainbow trout using powerbait with mixed success. I wonder if any of you fine gents would help a brother out:

1) At what point do you attempt to set the hook? As I understand if the tip of your rod is twitching that tends to mean the trout is testing the bait, so I tend to wait until the rod bends before I try to set the hook. Is that right? Sometimes I get trout swallowing the bait which makes me feel bad for it, on the other hand if I try to set earlier the fish gets away.

2) What's the correct way to fight the trout? I tend to use max drag and reel the guy in but I hear that's a pleb way to do it. Should I loosen the drag and let the fish pull the line out when it wants to, then reel it when it's swimming more in my direction?

3) Do any of you guys use equipment like depth finders, or just trial and error? Should I look for trout in shallower waters as winter approaches?

4) Right now I stick with a Carolina rig with about 2 feet of leader. Is there another rig worth a shot with trout?

Power bait is kinda fucked because your hook is normally covered with bait, making it extremely difficult to get a safe proper hookset. I've used worms with a small marshmallow to keep it just off the bottom. Set the hook 1-2 seconds after getting a nibble so they don't swallow it.

Depends on how big the trout are. <15 inches they might start stripping line with a medium to loose drag. In that case just let them run, but don't give them any slack in the line throughout the fight, don't horse them in. Any smaller trout doesn't really matter, just real them up. About looking like a pleb, you're pond trout fishing, there's no way not to look like a pleb.

Another anon might be able to help you out on this, I would recommend trial and error. Each body of water is going to be different.

Pretty good rig for bait fishing on the bottom. You might want to cast some panther martins also.

I fly fish trout, so I set the hook immediately. Bait is a bit different. If you're fishing C&R then set earlier. If you intend to keep, then you can wait longer but you will get some guthooked fish that way which sucks if they're small and you need to let them go. If they're guthooked badly just cut your hook loose. The fish will have a better chance to survive that way - freshwater hooks are generally built to deteriorate quickly in water and fish expel foreign objects from their bodies fairly quickly.

Depends on your tackle. If you're using 6+lb braid or similar strength, then pretty much just haul them in. If you're using light spinning or fly tackle you will need to set your drag and let them take line when they want to run so they don't snap off.

For C&R, the less you tire them out and make them fight the lower their mortality rate.

I use sonar to get an idea of the underwater depths and structure to find drop-offs and submerged snags etc. Once I know a lake well I rarely bother and I never rely on sonar to find actual fish. In my experience, I find most trout in 5-15 feet of water with most fish staying around weeds, structure, or inflows and outflows. Anywhere food would concentrate essentially. But fish can be maddeningly difficult to pattern so sometimes it's just pure luck.

Like I said, I usually fly fish stillwater using an intermediate sinking line (clear) 9 foot leader and small streamers or nymphs. In the spring I use floating line with chironomids under a strike indicator for great success.

When I'm not using fly tackle it's usually spinning gear with light 4lb mono or braid with a fluoro leader. I like spinners and small spoons. If I'm trolling, some lakes produce well with wedding bands, willow leaves, and worms.
For bait fishing, I've had mixed success with salmon eggs, fluorescent marshmallows, and suprisingly good success with small balls of Velveeta cheese (works just like powerbait)

Give them about one Mississippi. Also you might want to refine your technique for setting the hook cut down on the amount of bait you're using - you don't need much and an excess can make the hook slide right out of the fish's mouth.

Set the drag so that the fish can run, but make him work for it and leave no slack in the line to let him build up a head of steam.

If you're fishing from a boat over any considerable depth of water that you're not intimately familiar with, you should always be using a depth finder. You should also read up on trout strategies and ask locals in your area for pointers.

Yeah, you should go kill yourself for trout fishing with bait and then learn how to actually fish.

Anchovy rigs are great. We use them for coho when we go to Kitimat on the Douglas Channel. We stick to Devastation Channel and slay cohos, pinks, and the odd spring all day long with anchovies.

Zeno's book is awesome. Skinner is a legend, sometimes when I'm bored I watch his underwater striper strikes. His rigging method for eels is fucking awesome too, and adding water to plugs for longer casts.

used to fish with my grandad when I was really young and just started going again with a friend. Third trip out and not a minute after casting out I caught a Wrasse, no idea what kind I think it might be a Cornish Wrasse but I'm not sure. Any UK bros that can confirm?

Also caught a Ballan Wrasse later in the day which was a nice morale boost for me.

Never sure whether to feel accomplished or not when I catch a fish outside it's mouth. Caught a smallmouth once by hooking underneath its head. Not sure if it was even going form my lure or not.

Also, I used a johnson beetle spin for the first time this week. Caught a couple of small crappies, a couple average sized bluegill, a small largemouth or two and a tiny bluegill that wasn't much bigger than the whole spinner. And they're so cheap I don't feel bad when I lose one to a snag underwater.

"Foul Hooking" is the bane of tournament bass fishers. Stems from anti-snagging laws with good intentions behind them but ultimately leads to lost pounds in tournaments. Especially worth treble-hooked lures where you might start with a fish barely hooked on the lip and by the time it reaches the boat the lip hook set was lost and it's hooked by a fin or on its side making it ineligible.

Don't think any less of your catch. The law exists to keep people from yanking a treble hook into fish to intentionally snag them. If you're being properly sporting and foul hook a fish odds are that it was being defensive about its territory and tried smacking the lure rather than biting. Sure, it wasn't a true strike but it was still the result of aggression on the fish's part.

Jig spinners are awesome. You can source the components online and on all kinds of sizes or even buy the various gauge wire and bend your own spinner forms. It's old school stuff that still works most anywhere. I like to use #3 spinner blades with 1/16 or 1/8 oz darter head jigs and 5" yamamoto grubs. Chartreuse pepper and smoke pepper have always worked best for me. Red shad too.

It's not like it really matters whether or not it counts as a catch, since Monona lake is filthy so no one harvests from it, making it full to the brim with fish. It is impossible not to catch at least one panfish/minute if you try, aND you can reuse the wax worm multiple times. I think the record was 8 fish with one worm. A good way to burn away the hours on a lazy weekend.

I did three things. I used google earth extensively to search for bodies of water that I could then look up. I looked up my area+fishing in several combinations to find every obscure forum post ever made about people looking for fishing holes nearby to put together a list of possibilities and then I used city/state sites to find info. My city's website has a few recommended fishing locations and the Virginia department of game and inland fisheries has an extensive bank of knowledge on fishing locations, techniques and fish information.

If everything sinks to the bottom without getting eaten I usually move on and come back later to see if anything has taken notice yet. Also, keep your nose open. I've started noticing that a lot of times I can smell a fish-rich spot before seeing them.

Also don't get too attached to any particular piece of tackle/lures/etc because you are going to lose some unless you have water that is absolutely crystal clear and can see every possible obstruction

Nice one. What kind of streamer are you using?

Depends how big and strong they are. For dinkers I just hand line it. For bigger fish I handline if they're coming faster than I can reel but try to get them on the reel so it's easier to fight them. I like palming the reel rather than using the drag much.

Same here in Alberta and BC. Summer is the worst. When water is nice and cool in spring and fall the fish really come alive.

Also ice fishing is fucking amazing if you know how to do it right.

Tip-up rigts with herring for big-ass pike, minnow jigs for pike and walleye, and micro spoon jigs for perch, swedish pimples for trout, red wire worms for whitefish.

Man oh man I could go on and on about ice fishing!
We're about 1.5 months away from hardwater season opener here in northern AB

i tried it sometimes without success using mormyshkas. Just froze my ass off and quit soon.

This is a broad guess since every lake is differint, but in general I'd suggest between 3 and 5 meters of water ideally near where it drops off steeply.

so i can go fishing with him outside the regular dates.
i don't fish that often though; a few times in May and a few times in October/November due to the kraut.

Not a very good picture with the tail flexing away from the camera but here's my pops with roughly 5 lb of toothy, fish-eating, predator. Best we've caught so far but they get plenty bigger.

He spent the day running the usual little jig spinners which is what this hit on. He also caught more white perch than could be counted on two hands, a few yellow perch and a few nice crappie. I spent the day handicapping myself opting to stick to medium-large squarebill crankbaits, jerkbaits and some topwater frogs in hopes of bigger fish. It only netted me a small (14'ish inch) striper, small largemouth, fair size channel cat and a nice yellow perch. Not a bad day on the water but I'm hoping this coming weekend proves better for me.

My fly casting isn't good enough yet to have fun with really big streamers, but fly-fishing for pike is definitely on my to-do-list for next year. Do you also fish for other species in that lake?

I spend most of my fishing time fishing for seatrout in the baltic sea, which unfortunately is not prone to produce a lot of big fish (however when you do catch a large one, it is absolutely amazing).

not intentionally. i once caught a 60cm trout in the flensburg harbor while i was fishing for garfish with a spoon.
i've heard there are 50cm+ saithe in the flenburg fjord now. would love to catch one since they are great fighters.

Chuck County. For the Potomac and what it has to offer (snakehead included) I fish Mallows Bay almost exclusively. It provides the right kind of protection I need while using a 12', flat-bottom, jon with only electric propulsion. It's a fantastic little boat that's great for slow-moving, non-tidal rivers and even a moderately windy day on not-so-small lakes (St. Mary's Lake, Little Seneca, even stretches of Raystown up in PA which was the first lake I'd ever seen big rollers and white-caps on). But it is far from a river runner. Especially a strong running river that can turn ugly as quick as the Potomac is capable of.

I haven't caught any snakehead in them yet but a couple other popular spots to target them are along the Mattawoman Creek, not far from Mallows Bay. One is Smallwood Park which has the most amenities but also has entrance and launch fees. A lot of folks throw topwater frogs on braid right from shore when the aquatic grasses are up. Otherwise you're right at the mouth of the creek and have plenty of options where to go if fishing from a boat. The other spot is a bit further into the creek on the opposite side; the old Slavens Boat Ramp (now the "Mattingly Park Ramp"). There is no parking or launch fees but the ramp seems to stay pretty busy, at least on the weekends, so you'll want to make sure your boat is ready to go ASAP before you pull up to the ramp. Last time I was there was late summer and the grasses were pretty well established far across the shallow flats outside the channel, making it fairly difficult to fish without strong braid.

Of course there are plenty of other creeks on both the MD and VA sides of the Potomac that'd probably produce results but until I upgrade boats I can't opine on them.

Finally after 4 months of no fish my dry spell broke today and was able to finally catch a fish again. Got this NEARLY 39cm Golden Perch from the River using a simple long shank hook with worms. Only wish it had stayed on the mat while I grabbed my camera instead of rolling around on the ground getting debris all over itself.

Hello guys. This is my first time ever going on /out/ so if I sound weird that's why.

I just got a bunch of fishing equipment, and I want to go fishing as soon as possible. The problem is, I don't know the first thing about fishing and I have nobody to teach me. My "Plan" currently is to just take my fishing rod, put one of the little wormy things on it and throw it into a river and just kind of assume something will happen if I wait long enough.

When I first started fishing and had no guidance I made a lot of dumb mistakes that I didn't even realize, mostly involving using lures and tackle completely incorrectly. I'm still fairly new to it all but I've gotten a lot better. A lot of that is from watching people on youtube who know what they're doing and just from going out and fishing of course and picking things up as I go.

I also picked this book up and while it's really eclectic I feel like it helped.

I live in an area with very shallow, weedy ponds and lakes so my selection is limited. No crankbaits etc. Most bodies I fish are 5ft at the deepest.

I work for one of our states three fish hatcheries though we mostly only stock west of the ct river, other side. I believe is stocked by boh Kensington and quinnie

As a general rule of thumb. If there are signs like "class three trout stream". We HAVE to stop and put fish. Right by that sign

Anyways I let it and another, bigger (not that big, but bigger than anything else I've seen come out of that lake) bass go and kept a third for dinner. Why do people claim largemouths are unappealing table fare? I've only had smaller ones so maybe the big ones aren't as good but the ones I've had have all been hardly distinguishable from bluegills once cooked up.

I think this particular lake might be a bit crowded anyways, given how small everything in it is. You can find fish from any spot on the bank, easily, but nothing is very big. The bass I pulled today all came from a big school that was hanging out just a few feet off shore, at least a dozen of them similarly sized.

Fuck another east Hampton anon, salmon river has great trout fishing, not so much along the lines of salmon (though I have a buddy who caught a real nice salmon out of there last year), fishing on the salmon is going to be a bit tough at the moment because the recent rain put a lot of debris in the water and it has really acidified, lakes low as fuck at the moment and I'm assuming you don't have a boat, but if you do the smallmouth are sitting on the drop offs at around 8 to 12 feet, hitting em up with a wacky rigged senko is a pretty sure thing at the moment, best bet from shore right now at anything would probably be to sneak into bevins pond with some worms and just chase bluegills.

you can do it both ways, if you are trolling the spoon use a swivel about 2 ft above, or use a 3 way swivel with a weight on the third part of the swivel, for casting just use a snap swivel at the lure.

If I'm using a tiny bait to catch a smaller species there's really no reason to overkill with the breaking strain.
Also, visibility COULD be an issue, not arguing against that. I do use a fluoro leader with micro-jigs for perch in clearish water.
Then again I have been told and heard multiple times from experienced fishermen that colour or translucency does not matter in lines.

I notice when I'm using a 3x compared to a 1x I'm catching more fish, and the end of the tippet is much much thinner.

perhaps you are correct about presentation, with a smaller tippet it probably reacts to drag differently, or is easier to handle.

What a shame, looked like a really expensive baitcaster setup too, reel was so corroded from being in the water for so long it was basically a big lump of rust and the handle had snapped off, looked a lot like a Curado reel. Rod was some super lightweight type but all the corking on the handle and butt was FUBAR along with the fibreglass. Whoever lost that reel would have been pissed.

otherwise sure you might nail a bluefish, but more often then not you are going to attract baitfish. 5-7 inch plugs are going to be your best bet, also poppers.

You might want a nice steel leader, or a large mono/flouro leader. bluefish have teeth and are notorious for biting lines.

What fish do you have in your area that are bigger than sardines? and smaller than bluefish? That is the fish you want to mimick, in my area it's mackerel that we mimic, or herring.

This is my bluefish/striper tacklebox. If there is anything you want to see closer let me know.

I also can't stress enough, bucktails are brutal and will slay bluefish; also large plugs and poppers [not really top water lures but large balsa poppers]

I have a blue one that I use on bright sunny early afternoons.

The kastmaster is also an absolute beast, and it's one of my go-to's when I show up at the beach/jetty.

Also check out Uncle Josh's pork rinds, they work really well, same with GULP! streamers and grubs. either of the two work really well if you are learning to finesse bucktails, I feel like I am successful enough that I now just use rubber baits on my bucktails.

Yurofag here, that scale pattern is acutally quite common up here, I believe. Fishermen in my country actually sort cap into three categories/subspecies.
Those who are completely lacking scales are called "leather carps". Those with patterns such as the one in your pics are called "mirror carps", as the irregular scales on their sides can get quite big and bright. Looks like yours had a rough time tho.
And then there are "silver carps", wich really are big silvery goldfishes. And so almost literally as they've be known to breed with abandonned pet goldfishes.

When I was younger, I'd fish some roaches and bleaks for my father to mount as live baits for pikes. Those we wouldn't use ended up deep fried as tapas before the main course (usually bigger fish), and were by far my favorite.

Never quite gotten around the taste of "white" fishes too, except for Mullet, steamed with bay leaves, sweet potatoes and Mustard sauce.

Anyway I can't even fish pikes and the likes anymore now. Although they are plenty, rivers where I live are too polluted for me to trust them.

Yes, they are. As a kid I recall seeing big, fat brown leathery carps with only 4-5 huge ass bright scales on their sides. I used believe they were "shields" and that the bigger ones had less because they because they'd lost them fighting other fishes or escaping lines. I honestly thought they were scarred up, badass carps haha.

But they're just a weird strain of leather carps. And bright scales don't do much for survival so I guess the less they have the longer they live.

Fisher here like them because they're good fighters. But imho carp fishing is boring and disappointing.

They're probably the most hardiest fish around, friend caught a 56cm one 3 days ago at a stone weir going across the creek, he chucked it in a small pool surrounded by rocks, we came back 3 days later to see the carp was still alive and kicking despite half its body being out in the 42 degree heat and dried up. Fuckers can even live for months in a 2 inch pool of stagnant scummy water.

My bad. I've only ever had ceviche made from raw fish. I didn't know it could also be made with cooked fish. How common is the cooked version?

I caught a ribbon fish today using a bucktail with a gulp shrimp trailer. I thought it was an eel at first and gave it to some guy that wanted it.

Poppers and walking baits. I think Megabass makes some of the best looking lures but I've had plenty of luck on less expensive alternatives. Rapala's skitter pops make an awesome, light, gurgle with lots of bubbles when you draw the rod tip back slow and steadily. It's an effective alternative to quick pops or the more solid plunk you get from Rebel's Pop-R or an Arborist Hula Popper. The vented "gilled" design of Megabass' Pop Max and Pop X also achieve that same subtle gurgle on a slow draw.

For walking baits I'm pretty simple and prefer the classic Heddon Spooks in their many variations. With or without dressed treble hooks, a chugging mouth, props, or with the "one knocker" rattle in the tail. They've always been a big producer for me in terms of surface baits.

How necessary is an icefishing specific rod?

I havent been out on the ice since i was a wee lad but a buddy won an ice auger in a competition so were gonna go a few times this year. Should i buy one before going or wait until after our first venture?

For trout i dont fillet i just remove the guts and head leaving the skin and spine/ribs intact. Stuff the bastard with lemons, onions, mushrooms and maybe a few spices but not many, wrap in foil and bbq it. I prefer the natural taste of trout though i thinks if you over flavour it just ruins the fish, but if you arent liking the taste of your catch then you may have the opposite opinion

Well i know but thats kinda what im getting at. How necessary is an ice fishing one while your in a hut, because ive heard that full size rods are just a buzzkill since your in a confined space and fishing out of a hole thats only 8" wide. Im willing to try a full size while on the ice but i dont want to go out and just be pissed off the whole time
