I'm new to camping and really want to have a good first time. I'm having trouble understanding how this is done, though.

Do you go to a national park and camp wherever or do you go to a camp ground and pay the fee? I've been seeing pics of "renown" camp grounds and the amount of tourists kinda turns me off.

Help pls
I'm from Montana btw

I do both--totally depends on where I want to go camping. If there's an established campground nearby? Sure--I'll pay a fee to have water and a toilet, if I'm looking at doing some climbing or hiking nearby. But if you just want to go out into the woods with some buddies, drink beer and have a fire? You'll probably have a better time in a spot all to yourselves.

If you're anything like me? The one part of camping that might really bother the hell out of you is being dirty, all the time. I take two boxes of pic-related. If my butthole, hands and face feel clean, I am much happier.

If I were you, I'd figure out where I wanted to go, before figuring how I wanted to camp there. If you're in a national park, you may not be allowed to camp outside of designated sites. Figure out where you want to go, call the nearest ranger station, and ask.

Then yeah, you'll probably have more fun on national forest service land. Figure out the area you want to go, scout it out for potential campsites, and check with the nearest forest service station. Always check with the forest service anyway, but you want to be mindful of fire regulations. You may not be allowed to bring wood in, and may need a licence to cut your own ($20, I think). Also, remember not to shit or piss within 200' of water sources. When you call the forest service, ask them about water quality, and what method of treatment they recommend.
