Its a glimpse into a different universe, the value comes from introspection. How you relate to what you are seeing is a good part of the film.
Lets say there is a film about a man in the wilderness, he is a soldier and steps on a mine. The rest of the film is about his internal struggles, and lasts 40 minutes. Is it interesting? That depends entirely on the viewer... most people capable of empathy and philosophy would most likely say "yes".
Do you see what I'm getting at?
Films of the period were produced for completely different reasons than they are today.
