Knots

Knots are a very important part of /out/doors activities. What kinds of knots does out /out/ use?
Post guides if you have them

I mainly use a mixture of these when setting up my tarps.
Taut line hitch
Truckers hitch
Clove hitch
and figure of 8 knots

Lashings are welcome too.

The taut line hitch is a very good knot for setting up tarps as its adjustable and non slip.
To adjust all you have to do is apply pressure to the knot and move forward or backwards.

I usually use this knot to tie off & adjust one end of my tarp, I also use it for the lines going out to my tent pegs/

Knot of antrea. The antrean net was found in the municipality of antrea in the karelian isthmus ( old Finland ) The net was dated to 8400 years bc, This knot is the basic knot of the fishing net.

The remains of the net. The thread is doubled willow fiber. Knowing your knots will help your life. It might not be relevant to make a 1,5x25 fishing net from willow, but it is nice to know how to make one.

I used this >>62690 for tying together the broken ends of my bear bagging cord when an animal chewed through it.

After wrapping the bear bagging cord around a tree about two times, I use 3-4 consecutive half hitches (pic related) to secure the cord to itself. It looks messy, but it's perfectly secure and easy for cold hands (i.e., me when I've just woken up and am starving for breakfast) to undo.

For actually tying the bear bag onto the cord, I use a figure-8 follow through, like what you use to tie into the rope for climbing.

I use the Pitzen knot for tying on a fly to my tippet when flyfishing, and I use what I think is called a sugeon's knot to tie my tippet to my leader.

Bowline = fixed size loop
Fisherman's knot = ties ropes together same as a square knot, but works with thin, smooth line as well
Clove hitch, to tie a rope to stuff

With those knots alone and a little improvisation,
you could sail, climb (would both suck monkey balls, but we only got 3 knots), fish and tie shit to shit.

Like tying a line from the front of a kayak and around the bumper to secure it to the top of a roof.

Thank you for that pic. I can tie monkey-fists, three types of bowlines, ocean plaits, and the fucking Fiadore Knot, and pretty much every over knot ever created, but for whatever reason I never learned the taut line.

Holy shit, I could tell you a horror story about when I was a young kid and I was institutionalized for 3 days. I've written it out a few times, but never saved it.

Basically, in the state of Florida, 3 non-family members can get together a petition which is then approved by a judge to get you Baker Acted. This includes a mandatory 72 hour observation period for mental evaluation. They realized I was fine, but it sure fucked up my life.

Shit, I have a ton of guns....and the police know about it (they spent 2 hours searching and inventorying my apt). I read the police report later and they listed me with there "intel" unit because I had numerous assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammo. The SWAT officer who "cleared" my apartment and made sure my stuff was not class three/illegal actually complimented me on my "pile" (I own no junk). Also in the police report they listed me as a possible "neo-nazi"/domestic terrorist because they found some of the memorabilia my grandfather brought back from the war and left to me, and my military uniforms from Active. I read all this and "relocated" most of my hardware, moved out of there, etc but it has been worrying me since. I have not tried to purchase any firearms since but WTF? Baker act let me go early because they said I was no threat. So....? Thoughts?

I went through a period of serious inhalant addiction. I got to know the police pretty well, as usually they just let me go. One night I hit a sign post. Someone got my licensee plate and called them. Stupidly I answered the door. They immediately put me in handcuffs, and proceeded to begin searching my apt "for there safety" because they had been there before, and I invited them in and was quite civil with them. One cop was cool, but the faggot rookie saw my .22 MP5 on my bed and called in the "heavys". Night went down hill from there. Especially because all my nosy neighbors were standing around while the cops loudly spouted off about the "domestic terrorist" they caught. That night I was arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident (which was dropped) and possession of inhalants, because they found one, unopened unused can of dust-off in my apt. That one stuck.
That was over a year ago, but they have not come back to confiscate my guns....

Thats Kalifornia law not US law that she had guns confiscated under, and likely if she took it to the supreme court the kali law would be found unconstitutional and she would get her guns back. The government gets away with taking guns like that due to the extreme cost of fighting that all the way.

picture is of the pebble tie. It's simple, tuck a pebble in your tarp, tie your cord around the base. It's MUCH stronger than a grommet. Here's the evenk hitch:

I got taught this knot the other day for tensioning Bivvy lines.

You need to learn the difference between federal law (us law) and state law (kalifornia law). Kalifornia has far more restrictive laws than the rest of the us. The baker act is not in california, it's in florida. Under the baker act and federal law you do not lose firearms rights for a 72 hour hold.

ok the truckers hitch is another knot i use for setting up my tarp. I like using it because its easy to make and take apart and it allows me to get my tarp taut really quick.

When i'm securing the knot in the third part i tie a half hitch like >>62747 but instead of putting the end of the rope through i use a loop. This makes it quick release.

A tripod is a useful thing to have around a campsite. Whether you just want to hang something over a fire make your own tipi or use it as a lifting machine.

So you're going to need rope and 3 timbers of the same length

you should raise the 3 timbers just below where you are lashing them, this will allow you to pass the rope under them.
Follow the instructions in the pic
I find that 3-4 passes and 2 fraps to tighten the lashing is more than enough.

Now here is the tricky part, you have to make sure you left enough slack in the lashing to let the outside legs spread out & cross under the center leg. this is tricky and if you have the frapping too tight it wont work.

If all goes to plan it should look like this

The diagonal lashing is used to lash 2 timbers together at angles other than 90. It is used alot as supports.

I'm sorry, I stepped out of the thread. Basically, I ran into a bunch of legal problems. I had a difficult time with gun ownership (not impossible to own one, but getting CCW permits, etc.), and, because I had no ambition for college and wanted vocational training, I tried to join the military. I couldn't.

Forgot to add. My SRO (school cop), principal, and creative writing teacher. They thought I was suicidal. Basically, I wrote a "disturbing" (reading it now, it's just plain silly) story, and they were "worried for my mental well-being".

I once wrote an essay for my high school's D.A.R.E. Program class where I criticized the entire program, called it a waste of time and effort, said that I learned nothing and declared it ineffective (this was an end-of-program "tell us what you learned" essay). The teacher (my actual teacher, not the police officer) and a counselor flipped their shit and got my parents involved. Since I didn't do drugs, my mom basically brushed off the school that was directing her to punish me (they literally were pissed about independent thought in their classroom), although she did send me to a summer program for essay writing that summer just for wasting her time in making my teacher and school counselor yell at her.

Maybe if I was older at the time I could have gotten away with it, but I was 12, my parents had just gotten divorced, and I had just switched from Catholic to public schooling, so I was a bit anti-social.
