- The wood was fallen, dead pine with tarred inside heartwood. As in "the best wood for a fire there is"
- The snow was half a meter deep and I was not making a camp, I was warming my fingers and the bread I had with me.
- surrounding the fire with stones, as in preventing the fire from spreading...I have yet not encountered snow that ignites. Gathering stones under the snow ? I think it might be, that you have not tried that.
