Hiking Boots - recommendations?

I am looking at picking up a pair of hiking boots for year round use. I have my eye on the Merrell Moab Mid - gore-tex model (see pic).

Are these going to be ok to use in the woods in the summer, or am I going to die of heat stroke? Are these boots good for year round hiking. Brutal cold winters, and hot summers.

I read that they make a model called "Ventilator" for warm weather use, but they soak up water like a sponge.

I have a pair of trail running Adidas Supernova Riot GTX. They are awesome, except for sunny summer days, when they are black and bake my feet to the point where I feel heat sick.

They will get sweaty and wet from the inside and never dry out. By contrast all mesh boots (no goretex lining) will dry out much faster.

For all other conditions they should probably be fine, although I'm absolutely no fan of goretex, especially in a shoe that isn't made for wet conditions.
But I guess 100 million customers can't be wrong, so it must be me.

While we are at it, what about these? The Chamelion 4? I am debating between the Moab and these, and leaning towards these because they just look so much more sturdy/like they wiil last much longer. Looking at use in Peru, Bolivia Jungle, SE Asia, India, Nepal, and possibly the AT. Are they overkill? Events will center around hiking, motorcycling, city exploration, living in the jungle, etc. Thoughts?

I've had a pair of these for over 2 years and they're some of the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Worn year round and have thousands of miles on them with the only problem I've had is one of the insoles has started to slide back from walking.

Actually, dipshit, I am not trolling. I am getting ready for a vagabonding RTW trip where I will hit many different regions and situations. I am trying to balance weight/packability with reasonability. I do not want some super heavy boots if I am going to be in city or on a beach somewhere. Not only will I look like a douche, it would not be appropriate. As for the jungle, I was advised that I should get rubber boots which can be purchased overseas for much cheaper (throw aways). What I am looking for is a good, sturdy, all around shoe. And when I get back from all this, I plan on hiking the AT... So, no troll, sorry, I just need a good, all around solid performer, that can handle multiple enviroments and terrains. Thus my question. I know the Moab is lighter weight and probably more comfortable, but probably not as sturdy. So, anyone with experience please weigh in....

Then you're just an idiot. How about you start with the foothills before you tackle Everest? Learn what the fuck you're doing first, and then work your way up to more advanced activities.

Boots are like gloves. The most experienced outdoorsmen can only recommend features. The most important thing is fit. Try on a bunch of boots and see what fits. Of course, never having set foot on a trail, you probably won't know what a good fit feels like. Most people have to go through two or three pairs of boots before they figure out what they need. The boot should flex with your foot, not be so tight that when your feet expand they will restrict blood flow, and not have any pressure points.

Want something good for cold weather, wet or muddy. Should be easy to clean on the outside, like with a hose. Fleece or microfiber lined with a good fit. Can put on or taken off quickly as I go for walks on break and only get an hour. Or it could be something slipped over a regular shoe if those are any good. I tried the rubber ones and they're crap.

Actually, I got about 6 years of that in the military. Attended SERE school, etc. But that is another story. Personally, having been out of it for a few years, and currently trapped in Bum Fuck Egypt with no car/drivers license I have to rely on things like 4-chan and Amazon reviews to base my decisions. There are no "outdoors stores" anywhere close to here and I am stuck. So excuse me for trying to ask a fag like you an opinion (which it sounds like YOU have no idea about). With my upcoming travel, and limited budget and space (everything has to fit in a 40L pack) I am very limited in room, weight, space, functionality, practicality, etc. I am not a "gear queer" (as we called them when I was in service) so I do not know every detail about every shoe, etc. Just window shopping online, and hoping that someone with a brain can help steer me in the right direction. I only have room for one pair of shoes and flip flops. Would look pretty fucking stupid wearing ATD boots (ever heard of them?) or rubber boots with shorts if I am in town or at the beach. Yes, it would be nice if I had the option of trying on a bunch, but I do not have that luxury.

Get it, shitstick? So what positive to you have to contribute? Where have you been, what have you done? You are a stone thrower/troll and that is fine. Fuck off and die in a fire. I am looking for pep's that have experience with these shoes or who can offer reasonable recommendations for a decent ALL AROUND world travel shoe. I plan on taking a Enfield Bullet motorcycle around India/Nepal. Best shoe? Alpinestars motorcycle boots (which I own). Not practical for the rest of the trip whatsoever. Best boot for the Jungle? Some sort of jungle boot. For the rest of the trip, NOT practical. Buying different shoes/boots for every leg of the journey? NOT practical. See where you are a dipshit here? And again, I do not have the resources or means to try anything on. Thus, seeking intelligent advice...unlike you. DUH.

My needs...

I'm in NEPA. I have 7 miles of forest behind my house. There are no trails, and I just blaze my own path. It's very very rocky (used to be a slate quarry 200 years ago, and now it's a young forest), there are plenty of swampy patches, and lots of hills. I usually walk it with 8" boots in the fall/winter/spring, and goretex sneakers in the summer (about three times before getting spooked by how many bears there are back there).
I also plan on doing hiking meet-ups in NJ and PA on the weekends as well.

What you need OP is a couple pairs of really cheap sneakers. I prefer boarding shows myself with the flat sole. Vagabonding around with expensive footwear? It's going to be gone or worse, you are going to get mugged for them.

Also, like every shoe, you need to wear it for awhile before you are even going to THINK about jumping into the bush with it. you need to see if its going to fall apart and be comfy first. Nothing worse than blisters in the bush with shiny new footwear.

I spent 3 months in the jungle where a good portion of our walking was in rivers with our dick tied tight so penis fish don't swim up it.

I had a pair of them for a week and tossed them when I realized how impractical they really were. You're better off either taking off your boots and wearing flipflops or just walking across with them on. Get some gaiters if you're really that picky.

Get yourself a nice pair of boots that provide good ankle support and comfortable for you. I'm fond of USMC RAT boots. Built like a tank and has everything you look for in a boot. I have both the hot weather and the temperate (gore-tex)

I hate it because my feet get damp after hiking 6-7 hours on a sunny day, and then they stay damp for the rest of the trip. Granted, this is less of a problem in cold weather, and hiking in rain is a wash, IMO. You can keep raindrops out of your shoes, and stepping in puddles won't cause you problems, but when you have to ford a flooded creek in them, your feet will get wet.

They don't breathe that great so on hot summer days, my feet get extra toasty and damp than if I had a non-gore boot. They're nice in 30-60f weather as they have a semi-insulative quality without needing a insulative boot.

Personally, I like a boot thats has leather going up 3-4 inches before the nylon starts. You can step in puddles and shallow streams without worrying about getting a soaker

Yes, that's a point I've heard from others also. If your shoes get wet it is a lot faster to dry a thin leather boot than thick gore-tex boots. So for longer hikes, where drying might be difficult it might be a point to avoid gore.

I had a pair of gen 1 Chameleons(gortex). They lasted about 10 years with constant use in both city and outdoor use. I currently have a pair of Sawtooths that I bought in 2007 & wore in Iraq. I still wear them when I go inna woods. I have a pair of Moab slip-on shoes and a pair of Trail Gloves. I have never been disappointed in their products.

OP here. I am kinda set on the Merrell Moab mid boots (waterproof). Then I realize that they have a waterproof set and a waterproof gore-tex set. I then scratched my head, and had no idea. I almost ordered the standard non-goretex set, but the retailer would not take the 20% off coupon I had for Merrell (it would be fine to use on Keen boots though).

I'd be happy if I can score a pair of waterproof Merrell Moab boots for under $100.

the goretex is an older version of the moab with nicer waterproofing.

the "waterproof" only version is merrell's proprietary membrane, which means it's not as breathable as the gore.

either way, like i said above, if you live anywhere with alot of rocks or plan on carrying any sort of weight with these, you'd be way better off just manning up, dropping an extra 30 dollars and getting a boot with a little bit more support than yr average pair of converses.

A lot of people are talking about "support." What does that mean to you?

I honestly don't give two fucks about whether my boots "support" anything. All I care about is 1) how well they fit, and 2) how much padding is in the insole and midsole, so my feet don't absorb too much shock from the hard outsoles.

Stiffer soles will support the underside of your foot more and let you carry more weight. On flat terrain and gravel roads you might not feel the difference, but it is noticeable when you are walking through lots of boulders.

Try for yourself and find out what you like. But as there are differences between a sneaker and a mountain hiking show, there are also differences between hiking shoes. Some are designed for carrying light loads in flat and soft terrain, while others are designed for carrying heavy loads in uneven and hard terrain.

If you mean like the amazon where you're going to be in mush and streams and maybe even a little river a lot. It's best to get a boot that just let's the water rush in and back out quickly. Military jungle boots have or had eyelets under the arch of the foot to let water poor in and out. Because if you know you're going to get drenched anyway, might as well design it to dry as quickly as possible instead of trying to fight the inevitable.

You will never be happy with cold or wet or cold wet feet. That is 100% fact. So ask yourself, waterproof in a wet environment, or not? Trench foot happens fast, and it will take you to the hospital if it goes on long enough. So will fungal infections (which you carry already, they just need the wet to bloom).
You can also look at things like 'Seal Skinz' socks, which I have used for many years. They keep your feet dry, and you have the choice of insulated or not. I have both.

if it's cold, do gore. waterproofing will keep your feet warmer, but also wetter if the water does get in (sloshes over ankle cuff etc)

if it's summatime, don't worry about waterproofing, just get a breathable shoe that will dry out almost as fast as it'll get wet.

i'm a big no waterproof guy, but even I wear goretex in wintertime/autumn.
