Hey /out/, I'm looking to get a bike.

I'll mostly be using it for short treks around campus and to work, however I would also like something that can handle some less-than-perfectly maintained trails.

I'm not looking for what model to get, just some advice on what to look for.

tl;dr want a bike, how to buy one?

Any used hardtail mountain bike in good shape will do.
Sturdy enough for trails and jumping off the sidewalk, cheap, easy to fix. Get Schwalbe tires and battery lights for it and consider fenders and a rack.

That's my personal opinion, I'd rather buy another one for $80 every 5 years than deal with the extended maintenance work you'll have to do on a bike by then.

hardtail mtn bikes are what's up for practicality. I'd plan on spending at least 300 dollars, you don't want anything that costs less (unless it's used, that's another post though.

This is what I'd look for:

>matching quality of gear shifters, hubs and bearings
>frame that actually fits your size (there are online calculators for that)

With those criteria, it's hard to find a crappy bike.

I picked up an old Raleigh Sports "Horizon" for my father. Paid 45 for it, put new tires and tubes on, cleaned/lubed the chain, and tightened up the friction shifters (no tools needed for this) and it rides great. I feel bad that I didn't keep it, it is definetly my favorite bike so long as I'm not on wet roads. On wet roads the steel rims make for por braking ability.

An old Raleigh three speed (internally geared hub) would blow your mind (I believe).

Raleigh three speeds were realistic transportation in their day (no doubt true today as well) and built like it.

Whatever you get, make sure it is your size, google will help there. Also, get a floorpump and use it before every ride. A small pump to fit on your bike frame would be a good idea (even a cheap one) as would a small under the saddle bag to hold a spare tube, or whatever you need, would be a great way to spend 15 or so dollars on your new ride.

I'd suggest a good quality sporty hybrid (not a comfort bike), or a cyclocross bike, depending on what kind of handlebars you prefer. 32-35mm semi-slick tires because knobbies are for mud. Panaracer Paselas are good and cheap and come in both flat resistant and fast. That wouldn't slow you down but is way better than a racing bike for dirt and imperfect pavement.

Modern mountain bikes are too specialized for offroad and almost all the decent ones come with at least front suspension, which I only like off road.

Touring bikes are ok but aren't as agile unloaded.

A used rigid fork early 1990s mountain bike would be good too, with the right tires, but most 80s mountain bikes steer like oil tankers. But if you aren't serious about offroading it might not matter to you.
