They spend all winter working on a boat in a garage and tinkering with the motor, then spend the summer on the river. Minneapolis to NOLA is the ideal trip though not everyone makes it because they get distracted by something more interesting along the way or they have technical problems.
My friend's boat capsized near St. Louis a few years ago when a tug passed too close and the wash was too much for their tiny craft. Everyone managed to clamber out and get to safety but he lost pretty much everything he owned and had to start over from scratch. Don't think he's done much boating since. I had a news article bookmarked about it but it seems to be gone now, oh well.
