Lift's and taller tires make a larger difference than you think. Yeah most of the time one a subaru or a truck is fine, but a Joop can go over much hairier terrain than nearly all things under $10k. My joop in pic related as a 2" lift with 31" tires which stock are 28". Srs, having that extra articulation goes a long way.

if you can sleep near a light source do that.

have the jeep unlocked with the keys in the ignition so you can be gone in a flash.

try not to go too remote and stay away from forests.

sleep in a sleeping bag with the following:

water, food, your handgun, a very bright flashlight and a personal locator beacon.

As for security, look in the kid toy isle for trip wire alarms, jerry rig better wire and pulleys for setting them off, get 25' solar powered motion lights/attach buzzer to said lights, for motion sensitive proximity alert/not in plain sight of course, don't be camping in the middle of little Timmy's MOM's favorite park/parking-lot. Think about what people will get away with in a given situation, cover your ass, good to go. Go to ultra cheap hotel/motel once a week or so for credibility for your travels/background checks/keeping locals happy(he's paying his taxes/not hobo)
