The first time I slept in one I heard every single noise. Every leaf that rustled, every twig that snapped. I swear that at some point I was being sniffed by a woodland critter. It takes some getting used to.

Hate to break it to you, but staying dry is kind of difficult if there is any weather at all. If it were possible in using a glorified sleeping bag......the homeless world over would rejoice.

It isn't.

But the best way to learn is first hand. Me, I like either a hammock when it is warm or a floorless tent + stove when cold. If I want privacy or a snug as a bug in a rug feeling, I do a bivy inside the tent.

Keep in mind, I have no intention of buying said bivy, but I did investigate it.

It's a great emergency shelter. It's light, easy to set up, and can weather a pretty good storm if need be.

I have a friend who I hammock with. Hes never used a tarp. Just sleeps in his bivy inside the hammock. Hes never complained.

A bivy is awesome if you're on the move and don't want to set up a tent it hammock. They're great for short trips, or trips where weight is a priority.

Having multiple options for sleeping is great. Just because you have a bivy doesn't mean it's the end all be all. You can pick the bivy for some trips, tent for other, hammock for other trips.

Don't regret it. Bivy sacs are unique sleep systems that most definitely have earned their place in a sc/out/s arsenal.

Unless you're claustrophobic it's awesome. That's the GI bivvy, right? SOL makes a mylar+tyvek one that's amazing. Protip: put your mat inside the bivvy, and cut down ground cloth under, and sleeping bag and/or liner inside.

You don't need a ground cloth, but it will definitely help protect the bottom of the bivvy and won't take up so much space or weight that it's worth leaving behind.

I keep my bivvy, pad, ground cloth and liner together, and roll it all up as a single unit. This puts the ground cloth on the outside of the roll so everything stays dry when it's strapped to my handlebars.

This is how I feel, but all these nice tarp shelters rely on them if there aren't trees around. I think something like an REI quarter dome or passage tent just ends up being the most functional thing.

I have one but I hate it. There's no way to really fix a bug net to it and there's nothing to keep the bivy itself off your face. It feels like sleeping with a plastic bag over your head. I'm a fairly small guy and there still wasn't any room to movie around, if you can't sleep on your back forget it.

The green patrol bag that goes with the bivy is really great though. I've been using that for years.

The whole point of going /out/ is to test your mental fortitude and ingenuity. If you can't survive without trekking poles, you probably shouldn't be /out/ in the first place.
