So I was recently offered to go on a 3-5 day camping/hiking trip
with a couple of my buddies in the Blue Ridge mountain areas around the South East US (they wanted to go out there before the heat of Spring sets in 'round these parts), and I was dubbed the guy to bring the food.

I was thinking about Mountain House survival food because it's cost effective and I hear great reviews on it, I just wanted to consult some of you more experienced /out/doors-men

dat beef stroganof is amazing.

It's not really cost effective because each mail is about $6, but it's light and doesn't take up much space. Just make sure you have a way to get water and heat it up since the mountain house meals require boiling water.

I usually take a combination of those and other dried stuff like oatmeal and beef jerky on my hikes.

Kthanks, and yes-- I do have a way to boil up some some water and have other high calorie/nutritious foodstuffs prepared.

Also, we'll have 3 guys, (including me) and we'll be out for 4 and a half days out in the wilderness so what flavors of MH do you recommend? Especially ones that don't taste like cardboard because I don't want to look even more like the dumbass in the group

the beef stroganof is pretty much the best thing I've ever had in the woods. There's a lasagna one (forget the name) that isn't too bad either.

The scrambled eggs and bacon tastes like crutons and bacon bits.

sometimes I'll take those uncle ben's precooked rice packets and some corned beef hash too, that's really good, but heavy.

I don't get it. Why not bring pasta, rice, dried veggies, jerky and whatever else you like to eat that's light? If you cook it right, even simple meals taste great, especially on a hike.

Yeah, no thanks. What you suggest would definitely be cool for a single day hike when you're just cooking once but doing the same thing for a couple of days would get old.

Coleman is really good too, maybe better actually.
Bringing the dried meals like that is good but also bring some energy bars and at least one gourmet meal. Plan to make an event out of it on like the last night you'll spend in the woods, bring some dried sausage in a chili with some cocoa powder and act like it's a big deal even if it isn't. Have a side to go with it pudding or something.
Variety is important and having that one event for them to remember your food over is equally important.

Also, if you're on a trail there will probably be a water source near your camp area. If, however, you want to camp on top of a mountain there's usually no water. You'd have to bring a huge reservoir and carry it up the mountain... LOL no thanks.

I dunno if it's just me, but I find that salty foods really hit the spot while outdoors. For this reason, I usually bring a tin of spam and/or sardines as a kind of 'treat'.

It's amazing what a little sodium nitrite can do to perk up a bland meal.

Those dried foods like in the OP have so much sodium in them they would literally kill you if you just ate them on a daily or semi-daily basis. I have a whole box full of them but wouldn't dare eat them without having hiked all day.

I don't know, for me it's important, especially on long hikes. I've seen those hikers that eat their bag food with a spork trying not to look miserable, but I need a real meal at the end of the day (which also means more than 1500 cal). Also, cooking is a nice relaxing ritual after you set up camp. It's not like you have more important stuff to do after a hike.

I wouldn't opt for those OP, it's damned expesnive. I usually bring some of those fouil tuna packets and grab some texas pete/mayo packs from chickfila. I'll also bring beef jerky or those little sausage looking things that you can get in the chip isle at grocery stores. Oatmeal, dried fruits, chocolate, a few cliff bars. Instant potatoes work as well as some decent ramen (not the shit you get at wal-mart...)

All this stuff is pretty light, you get your protein and cals in as well. Easy to pack and cheap as fuck.

If you are dead set on freeze dried food I would only eat one a day (dinner maybe). Like others have mentioned they are very sodium heavy. I could not imagine eating 3 of them in a day.

You can get the Mountain House 72 hour kit on ebay for under 50 bucks most days. If memory serves you get like 6 entress, 3 breakfasts, and peas, green beans, and corn. Avoid Chicken and Rice. Its the only MH I have ever tried that I could not eat. Beef Stroganoff,Chili Mac, Beef Stew, and Lasanga are good choices.

I'm planning on working on my camp cooking skills before I adventure again this summer, and I'd love more information.

One tip I've heard is pre-soaking the base of your meal (beans, rice, pasta, barley, etc) the night before and draining it for your walk. The idea is to minimize the time and fuel it takes to cook the food.

They also have pouches for salmon and chicken now, too. The chicken is a welcome convenience for doing things like bean and rice bowls or something.

I like to make jerky for trips as well. Nothing like a hunk of buffalo jerky at the end of a trek.

3-5 day trip & you are responsible for food: bad luck my friend.

Nights: Pasta, pasta and more pasta - light, cheap, easy and high carbs. Take along tomato paste, spices, garlic and a chunk of dry parmesan as well as a bottle of butter flavor spray (near the butter, made for folks on diets)

Mornings: Instant grits w/ country ham (the unrefridgerated kind they sell at Food Lion,) or instant oatmeal.

Days: PB&J burritos made with flour tortillas, peanut butter and fruit gummies
Tuna packets (eat straight from the pack)
Nuts, dried fruits, granolas and other hippy goodness

The Itailian Lasagna package was about 10USD and it was good considering what everyone around me was eating. I'm glad that they don't expire for a while as well. I had bought 2 originally and ate one the first year and the second year we actually caught plenty of fish on our trip so I didn't eat it then and now this year I'll take it as it is near expiration. If /out/ is still around by July I will let you know how it was after holding it all this time.

I always have muesli for breakfast.

Before I go I get a heap of zip lock bags and fill them with muesli, dried milk, sugar, and anything else I can think of. Then in the morning all I have to do is pour water into the bag and Ive got breakfast. Simplest meal of the day and tasty as shit.

For extra tasty breakfast put in way more milk powder than recommended.

I have never been camping with them but these curries, pic related, are great. Its a foil pouch that you heat up and eat. They are all vegetarian so I usually add some meat and serve with rice. The list of spices on them is as long as my arm so they taste amazing. They cost around $1.50-$3.00.
