Being a Californian, gotta say John Muir. I visited Yosemite, Kings, the Sequioias, and more all throughout my childhood. I have a huge amount of respect for that guy.

I mean shit, he's even on our state quarter.

dude, as someone in the field of Conservation we basically treat the guy as a saint. It's not a small amount of respect he deserves and it bugs the hell out of me that people don't actually know who he is or what he did. Same goes really for many of the big movers and shakers around that time that helped basically save American parks and rec.

Lots of interesting suggestions, I'm learning a lot by looking up these folks.
What prompted me to ask was watching the Ken Burns National Park special (On Netflix streaming fyi) and learning about Muir and others.
