While I do believe that Opinel makes the best knives, it would take a hell of a lot of skill to be able to survive with absolutely nothing but an Opinel. An Opinel knife is just one of the essential tools that every /out/doorsman should have.

It would probably be preferable to nothing, though.

By the way, anyone try some handle modification on your opinels? Seems tempting, just a wee bit, not altering it too much, just a wee bit.

Because of this thread i've bought my first opinel.
Its a #7.
Aside from everybody loving them and the dirt cheap price. my main reason was: It doesn't look tactical at all. In fact it looks like the kind of knife I can use in public without freaking people out whenI cut my apples up.
I'm even considering painting some gay flowers or carving the handle to make it look more friendly.

Your main knife should always be a fixed blade. Opinels make great every day knives though.... and they're great as back-ups... but I wouldn't rely on one.

they're good for EDC light work work, not hard use.
lack of guard, shitty steel, lock that will loose over time (metal ring 'biting' wood) etc.

For survival it should be fixed blade in the first place.

Actually just remembered. That one was done with mustard and a fine brush. It only darkens at the edge of the area you "paint". Guess it needs Oxygen, too.

This one was the orange juice and marker.

#8 is the standard size with 8cm blade length. #6-10 are half a cm difference between blade lengths. Smaller or bigger than that it becomes irregular.

IMO:
#2 - cute gimmick
#3-5 - useless, no lock
#6 - small EDC for coin pocket
#7 - allround knife for small hands
#8 - good for everything
#9 - for big hands
#10 - outdoor knife
#12 - gardening
#13 - extremely weird gimmick

It produces a tiny layer of iron oxide (but a diffferent kind than rust) on the surface that protects the steel from rust (the bad kind).

Also, as I said, big hands for #10 for me as well. the #12 did look weird-big, have to agree.

There's also the fillet-ing knives that look like something out of a murderers arsenal. Good for fish though, I suppose.

10/10 I absolutely love it when factory workers take their job seriously and actually care about what they are manufacturing. Would buy a knife from them. I worked at a knife company for a little while and know what it takes to really give a shit about what you are doing.

Yes, if you really had to. But seriously- never handicap yourself. Add either an axe, hatchet, machete and or a camp knife to your kit. Having just one cutting tool is foolish.
You will have to make up your mind which one. I have all of them & use them differently.
