Preferably tall ship sailors but I'll take any marlinspike sailor advice I can get. Just started crew training on the Kalmar Nyckel out of Wilmington, DE.

The Nyckel is a nice looking vessel.
Went aboard her when she was in my neighborhood.
Learn the basic knots if you don't already have 'em down. Learning to eye splice and long splice will be handy. Also the proper way to coil lines, cleat and belay.
When going aloft or descending from the tops don't look down. Always hold the shrouds rather than the ratlines when doing either of the above. One hand for yourself and one for the ship is the rule.

Thanks friend! I actually just got "The Marlin Spike sailor" in today before this snow hits the eastern seaboard. The previous(and first) class was how to flake, coil and ballantine line. Thank you for the shroud advice, I'm hoping to be a climber once I'm less of a novice. She looks damn nice at the moment, still needs oakum and tarring on the main deck and we're sanding down the main, fore and mizzen top masts.

Maintenance is an ongoing thing; you'll get used to it. That vessel is steered by a whipstaff as you undoubtedly know by now; that means the helmsman will be steering by direction from the quarterdeck with directions given by points port or stbd. That horizontal capstan looks like it's labor intensive to use; I'm sure you'll find out about that too.
Would love to charter her privately.

Good thread OP. My dad sailed on ships quite a bit when he was younger but I never got the chance to work on one. Pretty envious: How did you get your job?

The Kalmar Nyckel is amazing!
As a Delawarian and a crew member, I am very proud of that ship and happy to hear you're doing the crew training.
It's an excellent program and a great way to get into tall ship sailing.

That whipstaff is a 40:1 advantage monster, the rudder for the Kalmar is 3200lbs(Purpleheart wood) and their is an engine in case things get dicey or the wind is blowing against her. The horizontal capstan is a windlass actually and we use it to haul anchor(mechanical advantage 10:1 so one man has a fair bit of hauling power) Helmsman does rely on calls and two are needed if the sea is rough. As far as a charter goes I know they do private sails and the foundation holds a website with the ship's namesake.

Thanks Anon, I found mine via a random bout of searching and calling a gentleman that knew about them taking on crew. Also, this site is a huge help for searching nationally/internationally( http://www.sailtraining.org/about/sailtraining/world/takeresponsibility.php )

I won't be around for a bit, but I'll keep eye out for you.
The crew you'll be working/training with are seriously some of the kindest, smartest, and most interesting people I've ever met. It's such a variety of personalities and backgrounds. So learn the ropes and all about seamanship, but also find time to sit and talk with crew.

I could go on at length at how great the sailing experiences are, or all the skills, history, and crafts you can learn, but you can probably infer a lot of that on your own.

i sailed tallships for years. i burned out on it pretty bad. many do, but not everyone. enjoy it while your eyes are still starry, they'll dim eventually.

will you be underway during your contract at all? make sure to get your sea time documentation. once you get enough time to get a proper license and get to know people (tallship community is small) you can switch to yachts or tugs when you get sick of tallships.

my best advice for a newbie is that if you are ever in doubt about anything, ask your mate or captain

Hey sailor. Not exclusively related to tall ships and marlinspike, but pick up a copy of Knights Modern Seamanship. It's one of the best texts for an introduction to the maritime world. Also any navy publications publications to the Boatswains Mate rate are useful, especially older manuals.
