I had never seen a bear as a city boy. The first time ever going to the cabin, we are like a mile away on some dirt road after 7 hours of driving. There is a black bear right on the side of the road. Friend's grandpa stops (the car is like 20' from the bear) and rolls down all the windows, and we just watched it for awhile.
We saw them a ton of times just riding ATVs thru the woods. Never had any bad experiences while I was there, but we slept inside a cabin and never ventured off without a gun.
The worst story I heard about bears there was one time when they were having a family reunion up there. There were a couple mobile homes down by the lake, and dude's grandpa stayed in a cabin right up a hill. Grandpa heard some knocking at the door of the cabin, and thinking it was a family member, he opened the door and it was a black bear. Ran back inside, grabbed a 12ga and just shot it into the air to scare the bear away.
