Imagine a cold piece of metal, you touch it and your hand gets cold, because heat gets drained out of it. Now you wrap said piece of metal in some cloth, and now you can touch it without getting cold. If the metal is warm, you won't get cold or warm, no matter if you touch it with or without the cloth.
The other thing besides isolation is padding, some like it hard, some like it soft, in general you can't have the comfort of a real bet while /out/, xcept you car camp.
