Sc/out/s should be more concerned about the Chikungunya virus, which is transmitted by two mosquitoes: the Tiger mosquito (in the South, Midwest, and East Coast) and the yellow fever mosquito (in the extreme South).
Symptoms of the chikungunya virus include fever, GI problems, stiffness, and extreme joint pain which can literally last years. Joint pain is reported in 87-98% of all infections, with 60% of patients reporting bad joint pain more than 3 years after infection. The pain is so bad that the name chikungunya in the native African dialect means "that which bends up;" which refers how victims are bent with pain in all their joints. There is no vaccine, and the only treatments are supportive care with IV fluids, fever reducers, and pain medication.
