It's the downside.
Look at it from the nations perspective.. You need a large group of people whos job is to get off an assault craft/boat and charge a machine gun & heavy defenses.
Most people would think it would be impossible to find willing participants in this endeavour. But, over the millennia humans have found a way to control others in tricky ways..
One of those ways is to go for pride & honor and patriotism. Really sell it to the masses, YOU ARE THE FEW & THE PROUD for example. Sell the group as being a place for only a select few people. build up the tradition & respect of this group. Their minds get so caught up in the regimentation that they forget their ultimate purpose is to die on some alien beach so The President, members of Congress, and all the other fat cats in DC can keep having 3 star Michelin dinners in the evening and great sex that night with high dollar 17YO ladies of the evening provided by the lobbists.
The downside is that once these guys get out, they still have that crap wired into their system.. The only way to get it out is with a crowbar and a fast heavy swing to the side of the skull.
