Wisconsin native here. Try the areas around Eagle River, the actual river and not so much the town. I've been up that way before and have to confess it to be some of the most beautiful landscape in Wisconsin.

I hiked at High Cliff State Park a few times as a boy and highly recommend it if you've yet to go. I know it isn't in the Northern Highlands ( actually on the east side of Lake Winnebago ) but it is still a fun weekend trip or at least it was. I plan on going there myself early spring or late summer when the mosquito should be less frequent.

If you want to hike further south in the state go to the Dells. You can tour on one of them duck-boat somethings while you are there too. The Dells are the one area in Wisconsin I really want to hike but this is another early spring/late fall case given the huge numbers of mosquito.

Door County is somewhere I've been as a child. I remember my family renting a cabin during the winter and if memory serves me right I had a lot of fun on that trip in spite of not being able to remember it well. It may be worth checking out what they have to do in the winter.

In closing another place I'd like to go is Rock Island. The park is open all year but the ferries you take to get to Rock Island only run from Memorial Day Weekend until Columbus Day. You are allowed to use your own boat and pay $1 per foot ( your boat's length ) if you plan on mooring overnight. The Boathouse, Lighthouse, and Maintenance Shop can provide water but it is worth noting there are no camp stores and I think you have to bring your own food. I'm also given to understand there is no electricity available for personal use and that all 31 campsites are clustered together on the south-western tip of the island.

Grew up in Door County. Bored/tired with that place, but it does have some pretty sick spots. Rock Island is okay, but I think the mainland is way cooler.

I had never even checked out the northern highlands until I was 23, even though I was only 2 hours away from it. I didn't even know what was over there, I thought it was just boring plains.

Rock Island is cool because it's a desolate island, but I was never that impressed with the scenery there. Door Bluff County Park, Ellison Bay Bluffs, Peninsula State Park (the tourists are annoying), Three Springs Natural Area, Mud Lake Wildlife Area, and NEWPORT STATE PARK (one of my personal favorites) are all a lot better than Rock Island in my opinion.

If you do go to Rock Island and stop in Washington Island, there's this weird state natural area on the east side of the island that is just a big desert-ish sand dune in the middle of a forest. Always thought that was rad.

Ellison Bay Headlands (Door county)
Ellison Bay bluffs (Door County)
Cave Point county park
Peninsula State Park
Ice Age Trail, Kettle Moraine Southern Unit
Wildcat Mountain State park - Mt. Pigsah
Gibraltar Rock
Baxter's Hollow (Place basically has no trail)
- Pretty much anything in Nicolet National Forest. Definitely Cathedral Pines state park. Quartz trail.
Governor Dodge State Park
Spring Green Preserve (Wisconsin's only desert)
Rock Island
Newport State Park

Being from Wisconsin you've probably been to some of those and you're probably a lot more familiar with the outdoors than me but there you go

Planning on riding my bike from MA to grad school this summer out west and hitting a bunch of national parks along the way. Isle Royale, Voyageurs and Canyonlands are the ones I'm most excited for.

I've had good experiences camping around the Green Mountains and the Serenacs before. I imagine the Dakotas have a similar mix of bland/stunning to Wyoming with fewer mountains.

Just need to get accepted first.

Did rock island a couple summers ago. Interesting taking a boat to an island, but OP's list including the UP/Wis area and not having isle royale on it is a travesty. There's literally no place up there that deserves mention more than that. It's still on my list for when I get out there next year.

I've been to almost every place on the list besides Baxter's, governor dodge, and gibraltar rock. You really can't go wrong with any of those places. Nicolet is pretty scary though, probably the only place you can get lost and die in Wisconsin.

I recently checked out Spring Green Preserve before it snowed and it was pretty sick. Not a long hiking trail, but if you like The Great Plaines-ish stuff with buttes out west, then it's sick.

There's a trail at the ellison bay bluffs that runs along the ridge of the bluff. People have fallen and died, but it is seriously gorgeous. It's kinda hard to find though.

If you go off-trail at newport state park and explore the lakeshore, there's some cool rock formations and stuff.

Also, Cathedral pines is GOAT.

Northern Highlands are gorgeous dude. Nicolet National Forest is probably one of my favorite places I've seen in the entire country. Looks kinda like Oregon but without mountains.

Will give Harney Peak a visit. I'll have to do some more research on good hikes in the other national forests I hit. National parks are nice because the information is all easy to find.

National forests are god-tier cycling territory, but I feel I haven't given them enough love on foot in the past. San Isabel National Forest was pretty neat, although I didn't see many trees.
