Who has an /out/ job? What are doing? Where are you doing it? Are you enjoying it?

Pic related. I'm a tree surgeon but am stuck feeling trees on a construction site this week so no climbing. Not climbing is almost worse than working indoors.

Climbing is the only part of this job I enjoy. It's a shame it's paid so poorly here. I'm thinking of trying to move into some other roped work that'll pay a bit more and doesn't have periods of ground work.

I've had a couple /out/ jobs. When I was 17, I spent 5 weeks in Youthcorps going from trail to trail, doing maintenance. When I was 22, I did some work for the PNTA, 15 days out in eastern WA working on the PNT. After that, I was a groundsman for a tiny company out in Pierce county WA. I loved every second of it, all of it. If you are looking to break into /out/ work, I would suggest volunteering a couple weekends to trail work,then apply for the forestry department, they are always hiring treedicks

I'm an estate gardener for the English National Trust. I look after a 12 acre riverside garden and Victorian walled veg garden. It would be pretty chill if the place hadn't been left to rot for nigh on 50 years. As it is, me and one other guy are sloggin' our breeks off trying to restore the place. Got some volunteers helping though so that helps. Originally from Scotland so they all call me "Grounds-keeper Willie".

there isn't a whole lot of work to do, you spend most of your time cutting trees down from ground level, I maybe get like 2 trees a year that require me to climb in it extensively.

Dude, contracting climbing is where it is at.
I charge $75/hour and I show up only to climb. I smash out the tree, hit the dirt, pull my rope, and go home. Usually with about 3 bills for a half of a day (i also bring my own rigging toys; I have a salary invested in climbing and rigging toys and ropes.)

Thats beautiful man. Did you have any experience prior to hiring on as a trail crew? Ive been wondering about that job and currently do a lot of trail work for my job as state park ranger. I had three seasons' prior experience doing trail work as a high schooler, and I've dabbled in landscape gardening. Before I got hired I called the foreman and he gave me two tips: they like to see a lot of volunteer experience, and you basically have to lie on the occupational questionnaire when applying on USAjobs.
Yeah it's six months. My crew is extremely flexible with student schedules.
Park housing is available but there's a lot of competition. One person told me it's really cheap, another told me it's really expensive, I'm not sure who to believe.

It is all about performance.
Do things that are above your skill level. Be able to get to every twig on the tree.
Learn good rigging principles.

Then make sure every local tree service knows that you can handle whatever the fuck it is.
Give them a discounted trial day, impress the fuck out of them, and when they have something that their climber is scared of or can't do, they WILL call you. They'll bid with you and your skills in mind.
Just gotta be the shit and have your own toys.

I live and work in Arkansas, and I am about 5 years in.
I also climb even when I am not being paid for it. My apprentice needs a lot of practice still before I will sign off on him going out into the world without supervision.
I have a tree service that I primarily work for with longer days and a more standard hourly rate, and that is where my apprentice is, but he doesn't nearly keep me busy.

Apprentice Lineman. Working distribution right now (utility poles, mostly in towns or cities) but I've done some highline/transmission which is 90% in the middle of fucking nowhere. It was pretty damn cool taking a helicopter into my work site every day and taking lunch on top of a 210 foot steel structure. I'd recommend it to anyone who thinks they have a thick enough skin and strong enough backbone. Pay's pretty damn good too.

I've taken to a lazy frog. I tie a VT or a coopers hitch and set a quick base anchor.
I use my foot ascender (currently using a climbing technologies one. I like it way more than my old cmi juicebox) to advance while I catch my weight with my hands. I just throw my lanyard over my shoulder to keep my knot tended.
Once I get to a working height, I just unhook my lanyard, toss it around something, and have a ground hand unhook me and pull my biner up. I clip in and am set on DRT ready to work.
It translates into less than a minute from 0 to 60 feet and beginning work with no extra gear to play with.
I normally take a breather though. The one leg ascent is definitely not the easiest way up.

Don't spend too much time planning. If you sit and look at it for long enough, it fucks the whole day up. The magic trick is to keep working, don't wait on anyone and don't make them wait on you.

Learn to make good cuts. Pretty cuts are safer and they will make you look good.

I started comp sci and switched to biology around a year ago. I worked for the department of agriculture for a little bit where I live (southern California) and drove a county truck around grapevines checking traps for pests, keeping records of where traps are and GPS tagging them, then checking them every month or so. It wasn't exactly /out/ but it was very fun and isolated.

We've also got preserved land for fowl here that has biologists working on studies, they hire trappers for lizards and whatnot several times per year when they need some to study or as pest removal.

They didn't pay all that well being almost entry level jobs, though it got me out and some experience/foot in the door.

I'm still kicking myself for not realizing my love for GIS before I dropped out of uni. Now I'm at a 2-year for horticulture. I like it but the what-if's still get to me and I just can't imagine paying for more years of college. Plan right now is to get my arborist cert or just end up managing some garden center or park idfk

What does it really take to do that?

I work for the Feds in the summer as a biologist and then find something for myself to do in the winter. I'll be moving up to New Hampshire soon to work with the Division of Forestry Protection at the Forest Service office on the UNH campus. I'll be getting paid to hike around the woods collecting core samples from trees and looking for bugs. Pretty excited.

Previous jobs included:
Trapping and tagging bats, tracking bats with radio telemetry, collecting sea turtle eggs and hatching them, rescuing sea turtles, controlling invasive weeds, capturing prairie dogs for a health screening, looking for salamanders and doing a soil survey, capturing black footed ferrets, trapping and tracking guineafowl in the African bush, GIS work, teaching a study abroad class about ecology, exploring Jewel Cave, and checking for flying squirrels in nest boxes.

I love the hell out of my summer jobs. Sure there's some tedium with biology related work, but I just remind myself that I could be stuck at a desk filling out paper work in a gray office somewhere.

If you want an /out/ science job, I suggest you get buddy buddy with a professor and do research for them while you're an undergrad. Has helped me out a lot.
