Should I have a trip of driving every day and go Whitehorse>Fairbanks>Anchorage>Whittier
or
Whitehorse>Anchorage>Whittier and have a few days to do whatever?

TLDR: Should I cut Fairbanks out of my Alaska trip to have free days around Anchorage

Fairbanks is nothing special. Anchorage isn't exactly exciting either. Whitehorse is only nice because there's absolutely nothing anywhere nearby and fresh food/supplies rock. Skip the city time, go /out/. There are lovely outdoorsing opportunities the whole way.

If nothing else, at least take the Cassiar Highway. It's gorgeous.

I'd go Whitehorse, wake up early and get started, to Fairbanks and spend the night. When you get to Tok it's a longer drive to Anchorage than Fairbanks. Then you get to drive down the Parks highway and maybe catch a glimpse of Denali. The Fairbanks to Anchorage is also an all day drive but it's not rushed. I've driven from Haines to Anchorage and it's a 15 hour drive if you don't run into a lot of road construction.

I'm sure you'll be happy enough doing your trip your way, but one final word of wisdom. Alaska is fucking huge and full of wonderful places to go /out/. You could easily spend a week in any corner of it. It can take forever to drive from anywhere to anywhere else thanks to all the road work that needs doing.

If you want something low-key and day-trip based, a day or two hiking in Kenai Fjords NP and half a day on a tour boat out of Seward aren't too bad.
