Hello there outdooers

I wanted to know, since a lot of you are into climbing and mountaineering.

I wondered how you learned to do knots, to get to know the good places to travel to and so on. How did you make your own skills and experiences ?

Skills and knowledge comes with experience.
For me it all started with watching youtube videos and finding a local website that provides info about place to hike, gear and stuff.

Simply read a lot, as much as you can, be curious, then go on couple of day hikes. No tough terrain, simply a trail. When you are comfortable with it, go to an overnight hike.
You will meet people that will tell you what they know, and thats it, pretty much.

I learned to do knots by working on ship and having to do them constantly with no sleep and huge consequences if I got them wrong.

That said I actually properly committed most of them to memory while working in a call center tying a piece of paracord again and again and again to stay sane.

Most of the most important knots are very simple anyway. The Bowline is the number one big lad followed by the Round turn and two half hitches (Clove hitch works fine too). The Sheet Bend is good for lengthening a line (though the Double over hand or better yet Double Figure Eight are my personal preference for dat rope slide). Really 90% of knot tying will be either one of these 3 in my experience. Easily learned and easy to practice.

For tight lashings the Alpine Butterfly is second to none to crank the last slack out and Reef knot is good for well Reefing sail but it works well to just tie off a loop anywhere.

Generally theres a only one golden rule that help to better understand knots. First off a good knot is one that can be untied easily anything else is called Granny Knot and you'll 50 lashings. So forget the overhand knot and always do a figure eight. The Figure eight is superior because you 'break it's back' or fold it at the center so it will come loose the way an overhand knot won't. That said under strain even the best knots sometimes need crowbarred open with a Marlin spike.

Anyway. Bowling. Round turn and two half hitches. Sheet bend. You're set.

find a mentor. someone with experience who's passionate about it and likes to share their passion and knowledge. hard to find, but impossible to beat. barring that, books, internet, make a friend who's also enthused to get into it and practice together, double checking everything.

i can't speak for ship rigging, but for climbing here's a better knot list:
>family of 8s
tying in to the rope and anchors
>clove hitch
quickly attaching yourself to the anchor
>munter hitch
when you lose your atc and need an emergency belay/rap method
>double overhand
quickly joining two similar diameter ropes for rapping
>double fisherman's
joining two different diameter ropes, or if you want them securely joined for a while
>water knot
joining two ends of webbing (basically just an overhand follow-through)

Fair enough. I don't do any rockface climbing sadly so I was recommending knots purely for general use rather than specifically climbing. The more knots the better. The water knot and munter hitch are new to me. Thanks.

bowline works for tying in too senpai, dunno why but 8s have gained way more popularity now.

8 is obvious at a glance if it's wrong.

therefore figure 8 follow through is what's being taught to tie in, and once people have a habit they stick to it.

and figure 8 on a bight is super fast for anchors.

Bowlines are better for anchor points, like quickly tying a rope around a tree. It's easy to fuck up a bowline and it's difficult to check quickly. You don't want it to be a single point of failure. But a figure 8 is bombproof and even if you fuck it up, it will probably hold you. The AMGA is trying to make figure 8s the standard, and guides will not tell anyone to use a bowline.

But, if you want to climb with a bowline, go ahead. It's not a bad idea. It's very practical, but has significant disadvantages in many climbing situations.
