I just use a 10 dollar backpack from walmart. No need to spend $150 on another osprey or put miles on my Exos. If I'm doing 20 miles or less then I only need a pack to carry water and a few snacks.

Like others have said, any small pack would work.

I use a Deuters Speed Lite 20 which is a really nice but pricey pack. If you've got money to burn and plan on day hiking a lot (or use it as a summit pack), I'd definitely recommend.

REI flash 22's my go to daypack. Almost perpetually on sale for $30 and a good balance between minimalism and creature comforts. My only complaint with it is that the straps aren't very padded -- nice in the summer because they're super breathable, but they leave something to be desired in colder weather where I would take comfort over breathable straps. Picture is the new model which I haven't tried, but I can't see it being much different.

That's what I've been doing for the last 15 years, I'm on my fifth backpack bought this way, I just use them until they start to look real bad or are obviously about to break then go buy another, most I've ever paid was like $5 for one that was new, still in the plastic with all the tags on it, last one I got was in super condition but the colors were too faggy for me so I bought it and hit it with the black spray paint.

If you do want to spend some money on pack that will last you for year and has a lifetime guarantee the osprey talon 18 is one of the best on the market. You can catch them on sale for $50 sometimes are buy used one ebay or craigslist, they will still honer the warranty.

I think what I really like about the flash 18 is that it's great for day hikes but it also works great as an auxiliary/summit pack for longer trips. I use mine as a stuff sack inside my 55l and then break it out for side excursions or a quick peak bag.

kek. last backing trip i brought fresh onions, bell peppers and a glass bottle of hot sauce.

but on a half day jaunt? hell yeah i want a light pack. what do you need for that kinda trip? water, snacks, a camera, and maybe a warm layer is all i bring. why lump that small a load into some bulky, heavy, hot, too-big, pack that weighs more than everything else you're carrying combined?

Second. I just did this yesterday, while trying for early season mushrooms (Nothing yet). Four tortillas, four cheese sticks, and a quartered piece of summer sausage for snacks, plus my emergency kit that's always in my camelbak: two handwarmers, emergency blanket, water filter (lighter and knife are my EDC). I could honestly stay out for weeks with just this if there's some food around. You'll never need more for a day trip.

I'm very happy with it, it has a tiny frame and mesh back, the bottom pocket is ideal to store a rain jacket, I got two side mesh pockets for bottles (I don't like hydration systems) the top pocket has nice organizing features like pen holders and smaller compartments, which is nice for maps and stuff, and the main compartment is big enough for snacks, a sitting mat and some other useful stuff. even came with a raincover.
Still light enough and holds for years now.

Well its intended to be a 12 hour pack and I strap an good bit of stuff on it for a 22l pack
I would say it usually hits about ~30-35lbs (guess honestly never weighed)
Not really abuse but more than what it advertised for I ain't super nice to it but I try to take care of it so it lasts
I don't do many day hikes mostly weekend trips because I have to drive about 4 hours to get to where I like going /out/ (george washington national forest)

I'm an ultra-lighter so anything over 1.5 #'s is a big no-no for me.

I could be pretty far off on that weight (I wouldn't be surprised actually) but the pack holds it fine
After thinking about it
The pack 3 lbs I think
Tarp hammock 4 lbs (outside pack)
Sleeping bag ??? Guessing 3 lbs (outside pack)
Compleats meal website says about 300 grams so .6 lbs per meal I'll take 4 on a 3 day trip so 2.4lbs
Some Raman bowls (2) not sure I'll call them a half pound together
And 2 more meals of some kind I'll call it a half pound also
Snacks half pound total for food 4 lbs more or less
Half gallon of water 4 lbs ish
Water filter 1lb
Cookware 1 lb maybe? It's the aluminum set that you see all over
Clothes 2-3 lbs depending on weather
Assume about 2 lbs of other stuff like fire gear multi tools and other little things that add up
More like 25 lbs for a more scientific approach other than my shitty guessing

I just use my day pack for those trips

For an actual day trip I would probably only have a Gatorade bottle, snacks and some random shit like multi tool, fire stuff, basic FAK and that's about all probably weigh in at about 2 lbs maybe 3 depending on if I'm going with other people or not
