I think his idea was cool, to go out and just explore, escape it all. In the movie he got a bit too edgy about it, and I think that was my biggest problem with it. He was so obsessed with making a profound statement, that he came off as a bit obnoxious.
I think it was stupid that he got himself killed, especially when it was probably pretty easy to avoid.
Overall I think it's cool what he did despite some of the mistakes he made, and I admire him for being able to really experience so much of America. That said I would never take it so far as to go strand myself in the Alaskan wilderness, but I think you get the point.
