Rattlesnake story: Back when I was about 8 the men folk of the family decided to go hiking into the canyons above L.A.. My dad, uncle (and his two doberman pinschers), and myself where hiking down a steep canyon on a single file trail. My uncle was in the lead when he stops and we all did the standard bumping into each other and wonder why we stopped. My uncle says "There's a baby rattlesnake on the path". We respond "get a stick and flick it off the path". So my uncle grabs a stick pokes it at the little snake, gets the stick under it just so and flicks his wrist....and arm up into the air. Now I don't know if any of you have experienced it before but time really does slow down when terrible things are happening. Anyway that day a baby rattlesnake seemed to fly for about five minutes in the air over our heads. Not really of course but we all watched it in slow motion go up, up, up, squiggle in the air, then fall right back down at us and land in the same exact spot. And now we have a very pissed of baby rattlesnake right in our path again.....So now the dogs have seen the snake and are barking and trying to get to it while my dad and I are holding them back. My uncle starts to put the stick back under the snake. Both me and my dad yell "NOOOO!" but he looks back and says "I know I know I got this". He then proceeds to gently flick the little pissed off viper over the canyon edge... and down into the pool we where hiking down to go swimming in.

I've had various other encounters with Dolphins on the west coast but I think they like playing in the wake of big boats

Also had a couple of encounters with sea lions surfacing close to me, those things were timid though.

Anyone in Georgia ever heard of Yellow River game ranch? It's where the General (groundhog) lives and it's basically a redneck zoo. Tons of friendly rabbits, deer, squirrels etc running around with cages and pens for dangerous animals or good climbers. Cool place to get way closer to animals than you would at a regular zoo and you can buy cheap food to feed everything.

Some people are counting birds so I will too. Loads of birds come to my back yard to drink from my pond, and sometimes I put seed out for them. Well just this year, a humming bird made a nest in my redwood and raised two little babies. They grow up remarkably fast.

The possums around my house are rather tame as you can see.

I've also touched a sea turtle while snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, and saw dolphins and stingrays on the same trip.

By far the most special to me was the black panthers. They are Cryptids in the US, and only a handful of people in my area claim to have seen one. It was an incredibly rare experience.

I always win because my fear of being gutted by a wild animal outclasses their wanting to kill me. The only time I came close to losing was with the cougar, and if the dock hadn't been there I would've most likely gotten killed in the lake. After having to outrun the moose I took up cardio, and swimming, since I thought it would be the best thing to prepare myself for having to get my ass into a lake and away from the animal in question. Quite frankly, If there hadn't been a dock, I doubt I would've been able to swim far enough to discourage the damn cougar, but the whole diving underwater and swimming a good 15-20 meters before surfacing helped out immensely, which was apparent when I surfaced and saw the cougar pacing back and forth, presumably waiting for me to swim back that way. Those fuckers are smart and fast as fuck, you don't want to be the one trying to outrun them, i can tell you that for goddamn certain.

More recently and exciting, me and two of my friends went for a hike in these woods atop a crest, and we ran into a whole fucking pack of coyotes. Luckily the coyotes where I live are very skittish and we managed to scare them off

I had to hide up in the tree, while my friend made a break for the truck.

This happened a few other times; twice I had to keep the ostrich at bay with some long tent poles stacked on each other while the grad student finished setting the gear.
