Why no carry it on your person or keep it in the bag. With your backpack on your back and strapped in, by the time you unclip everything you are going to be dead in a life threatening situation anyway. One extra zip won't change that.

It's used in a metaphor to describe people who want to protect other people.
Basically they view normal people as sheep (docile creatures that can't protect themselves) and they see themselves as sheepdogs that protect the herd.

Don't know if you saw my original post, but this is all stuff left over from my old pack, perishables aside.

I'd like to add a sleeping bag, but the only ones I have at the moment are super bulky, and would take up a bit too much space in my car (where the BoB is). I've a few extra blankets in the car as well, but in all honesty this isn't something I've slaved over.

It's also my first iteration of any sort of bug out bag, my camping / backpacking pack is far more stocked. Thanks for the recommendation though, I'll try to save up for those things.

A few thoughts-

Dump the sporks. They're redundant. The Maglite and D batteries are a bit on the weighty side. Consider replacing with an LED light that uses either 2A or 3A batteries. Then get a headlamp which uses the same size batteries. Then get NiMh rechargeables, plus a complete set of spares. Get a solar charger, or make one out of a repurposed solar garden light.

Get rid of the books, load the same or comparable onto your smartphone. Also load a couple of map apps that you can use off line. Make sure your phone can access your solar charger.

I could go on for a while about your set up, but it would be mostly nitpicking.

Dudes walking around in multicam with plate carriers and high-end AR's and bags will be painting a big fat target on their back for the first opportunist with a scoped 30-06 sitting 400 meters away. Best thing to do is just have a normal little bookbag filled with only essentials, have some rugged but "normal" looking clothes, and keep a short barreled shotgun/rifle or handgun underneath a coat. Avoid people at all costs. Only use your weapon if you have absolutely no choice- meaning you're cornered in a room somewhere with no way to run. Keep the real goodies back at "home base".

If SHTF, guys looking like you will be the ones I'll avoid- not because I'm sacred of what you might do (though the last thing I'd want is to run into a trigger happy paranoid "sheepdawg"), but I'm scared of what kind of attention you'd attract.
