I need some good /out/ reading material recommendations. I've only ever read Hatchet, and that was when I was a wee lad. What are your favorite books to read while in the woods?

Dawn by Phil Elverum.
It's about the author staying in a cabin in Norway. Comfy as fuck. It's pretty funny too. Comes with a CD of songs he wrote during the trip.

Some people credit Wordsworth with getting western civilization interested in nature in the first place.
Of course he was influenced by John Clare who basically invented environmentalism

Robert Service poetry is fantastic. He has a bunch of different topics, but a large portion of his poetry is about the Yukon.

I thought Heart of the World (has a few titles but it's about NatGeo looking for Shangrai-La) was really good. A little hippyish and spiritual, but was great.

Deep Survival: Who lives, who dies, and why. Goes into survival psychology and how our brains and bodies react when in extreme situations. Not sure of the accuracy of the info, but it's interesting nonetheless.

/lit/ could also be a big help if you're looking for quicker answers. More active board and books are their specialty.

Not him, but to be honest, just about any ancient literature is pretty /out/-oriented. Everyone back then was pretty outdoorsy. Even stuff like Ovid's guide to getting laid at the Roman theater basically took place under an open sky.

My Side of the Mountain - A 12/13 year old boy from an overcrowded apartment in New York City runs away to find his great-grandfather's old farm in the Catskills, where he promises to live off of the land for an entire year. Super comfy book with some appropriately heavy parts and a lot of things to learn. Very nostalgic and somewhat unrealistic, but there's a few fuck-ups with nature thrown in for good measure.

The Tracker - A book by one of the world's most skilled and spiritually realized survivalists and trackers, Tom Brown Jr. It details his early life as he was trained through excruciating and empowering physical and mental trials to find the threads that keep man connected to the greater balance. It is quite a heavy book with some amazing stories to tell and even more intriguing lessons for you to ponder on. It is followed by The Search, which simply elaborates on what Brown had done and learned as his life went on after adolescence.

Walden - I needn't explain this one, right? We all know Walden, right?

My First Summer in the Sierra - John Muir's first book, although it was not published until much later in life. It is a compilation of the journals Muir wrote when traveling on foot with some shepherds into Yosemite from the Central Valley during the 1870's. He is very open about his experiences, even detailing some strange esoterisms that would have gotten him ridiculed at the time. All-in-all, the book proves that John Muir was not only a cool guy and highly intelligent, but a complete fucking nutcase, too. The good kind of nutcase.

Into the Wild - You've probably heard of it, but if you haven't read it, you should. It's explains more than just Christopher McCandless' life, and is very good material to chew on and contemplate after finishing it, as interpretations tend to vary widely.

The Crossing - One of Cormac McCarthy's lesser known books. Not entirely an /out/ book - granted most of his books are partially /out/ - but among those that I have read, this is one of his that is most intimately tied with nature. It is very long, slow, grueling, and the following only encompasses the first quarter of the story, but it leads to many more that will just fucking fuck you up, familia. A 16 year old rancher living with his parents, his 14 year old brother, and his dog, in southern New Mexico, volunteers in the stead of his father to hunt down a strangely intelligent, lone she-wolf that came from the Animas mountains in Mexico and killed several sheep in his area. He spends much of the book staying far from humanity, hunting down this wolf, and eventually gets tied into a bunch of other fucked up or enlightening experiences.

Then there's Call of the Wild, as well as White Fang, but I don't think I have to describe those either. Just look 'em up if you really don't know.

Same. Enjoyed the sequel to it too. Bit over the top with the ending and all. If Hatchet and it's writing style are your thing consider a book called White Fang by Jack London. I read that one and both the hatchet books when I was in middle school. Loved them.

Both books center around dogs, Call of the wild features a house groomed dog that gets taken to the Yukon to become a sled dog Where as White Fang takes a half wolf/domesticated doggo and takes it to civilization. Both are fantastic out books and if you have a son be damned sure he reads both, these and hatchet are essential /out/ boy literature

The only /out/ book I've read that want mentioned is Canoeing the Adirondacks with Nessmuk. It's a great read, and the author is honestly funny. You'll learn some cool stuff, you can also read a survival book featuring the same author, I think.

Jeez. If FF5 is "extremely old," I guess I'm getting on in years, myself! If you're not mistaken about that book, it's a lot newer than you think. The Foxfire Project started in the 60's in a high school in Mountain City, GA. It's a bunch of kids doing anthropology in Appalachia, mostly in western North Carolina, just north of where Mountain City is. A lot of the interview etc. were done in Madison County, NC, which is sort of northwest of Asheville, on the Tennessee border. I've spent a good amount of time there, and, although I don't think I met anyone interviewed for Foxfire, I've met their relatives, to be sure.

If FF is /out/-tier, then check out an album called "High Atmosphere." It's old-time music (the predecessor of bluegrass) recorded a number of places around western NC and VA, including some with some of the people from FF interviews. I guess that's really /out/ music more than /out/ books, but...

Yeah, winter is by far my favourite with the original a close second and the rest in equal place for third.

Paulsen has a lot of /out/ books, i think primarily because he draws from his life and he had a pretty /out/ life. Ive only read the hatchet series but check out his wikipedia page and have a look at the list, its pretty impressive.

Sam keith wrote a book based on his journals. It is pretty comfy. There is a chapter about him finding an abandoned baby moose or elk (been awhile since I read it). Dick takes it back to his cabin and tries his best to save it. Lots of other little things not mentioned in any of the documentarys.

Not an explorer, but The Maine Woods by Henry David Thoreau is a compilation of newspaper articles he wrote on 2 separate canoe trips he took with moose hunters into the northern Maine wilderness.

Some recollections - parties at isolated logging camps where news from the outside world, and especially new reading material, were basically priceless. HDT was a hit out there.

Talking with their half-indian guide about surviving in the wilderness..Guide says he couldn't do it, but his grandfather probably could. White men's guns and civilization made /innawoods/ too easy. This was around 1850, the native population in Maine had already given up on ancient survival techniques.

Serious portaging! Their guide was a beast.

Being told, "No, don't fish here, the trout in this lake are too big, we'll capsize."

Well-written and each chapter is essentially a mini essay that you can enjoy one at a time.
