Can we have a hammock thread?

I'm looking at the Grand Trunk $20 one from Amazon for summer hiking. I've seen some awesome hammocks but they are all pricey, for example the EVO Nests.

Anyone have a sweet cheap hammock they can attest to?

Also: why hammocks are better than tents.

Here's my badboy - ran me like $40 or so at an army surplus place. The only thing I did to make it more betterer was add the wood dowels in. It makes it much easier to get into gives you plenty of comfy room for your head and tootsies, plus it makes it easy to roll the whole thing up like a scroll.

I've got an ENO, thinking about picking up some accessories like one of the rainfly/tarp things, some straps, maybe a mesquito net.... All that shit worth it, or too much trouble? Also the hammock along with a 45° down bag is god tier for camping, so fucking comfortable.

I don't actually... I'm 6" and I fit ok though. Often times I have my boots in there with me at my feet (so no crawlies get in) so you might have enough room to be comfy still. It will be tight but it's only fabric and screen. The wood dowels are probably a little about 2 1/2 feet or so... again not 100% but within a couple inches i'd say

I've actually been wondering how well a bag works inside a hammock. Do you not slide around a bunch inside it? It seems like the nylon-on-nylon action would have you slip-sliding around all night, making it hard to get comfortable.

If you're spending that kind of dosh you'd best look at other cottage company's offerings. Most people only buy Hennesy because MEC carries it then "upgrade" once they find out other options exist. They are not bad hammock, just not as nice and personally a bit small for me (6'2").

I've bought 4 Warbonnet Blackbirds so far and everyone who received one loves it. Some Blackbird owners have a problem with calf pressure and migrate to the switchback hammock.

Pro-tier hammock gear is a "top-quilt" which is like a sleeping bag blanket that only encloses at the foot end. Because you'd optimally be using an "Under-quilt" as well your underside is warmed already and it helps your body heat warm up the down insulation much faster

Good gear will run you a small fortune, but it's all fairly easy to DIY or improvise on the cheap.

I'm too cheap for a dedicated top-quilt so I use my 0C bag with little issue. A bit of a pain to do up while inside a hammock, but once you're in, you're good for the night. You WILL need under insulation but a pad should do fine.

I've got a military modular sleep system... It's got a bivy sack kind of built onto the outer later for waterproofing and rated to some pretty cold temps if you're using all layers. I don't know man, long time ground sleeper, figured I'd give the ENO single nest hammock a try, camped with it for about a month and a half and ended up trading it to some kid for something. I just didn't like it. And then I realized just about every person who swears by hammocks is usually some college kid who never spends more then a week or two out on the road, or some weekend warrior type, who never really got used to sleeping on the ground.

I'm sure not all of you hammock people are like this, but all I hear in my head when you people say "it's so much more comfortable" is "I don't know how to take three seconds to find a decent spot to sleep on the ground".

I certainly was not sold on hammock camping. Although, it was nice for reading on a lazy day, but hardly warrants the volume/weight in my pack.

I think it's way more comfy its about finding the right position, which for me is diagnal, it's also lighter for bike camping purposes and i don't have to bring a sleeping pad. Bad side is you need to have trees where you camp.

I had a grand trunk hammock, it doesn't have any sort of large stitching on the edges, so sometimes it doesn't want to make that natural concave shape, and it can be somewhat awkward. However it is also very small and light

Their hanging ropes work very well. I prefer them to straps.

Dont take a hammock in the winter. On that note, do take a hammock in spring, so when it rains, you are above the ground and not wet everytime you have to move your tent.
Or when no trees.

Also, on the same note, dont take a tent into a forest where you wont have the square footage to put up a tent.

Also last point, it takes 20 seconds to tie a strong knot, it takes about 5 minutes to pitch my tent. Saves a lot of time and space when you can use a hammock.

I love mine, keeps you cool in the sun and you can use a blanket or a thicker sleeping bag to keep you warm at night.

They can be, I wouldn't recommend one for camping. I had one set up on my back deck for a small time, I had to layer it with a thick blanket. Even then it was only semi comfortable.

Oh and they can get tangled too.

I wouldn't even think about it due to insects. Camping hammocks are usually solid on the bottom with a bug net up top. You will probably be unbearably cold in the winter unless you use something like a thermarest and a good sleeping bag.

Pic related. If you have a line strung between two supports, with a load on the middle (i.e. a hammock), then the force applied to the supports approaches infinity as the slack in the line approaches horizontal. Since it's generally impractical to hang a hammock with an angle any slacker than 20 degrees or so unless you're hanging it from the ceiling, and since if you're moving around, you'll be applying force greater than your bodyweight (possibly much more than your bodyweight), you generally want your line to hold at least 800 pounds, preferably at least 1000. Also, paracord is nylon, and nylon stretches, which makes you wake up on the ground. Climbing accessory cord or webbing works fine.

Well OP I think you ought to consider making your own hammock.

I made my own from riptstop nylon that I got from Walmart for $0.75/yard.

I know it might sounds far fetched, but go grab a 500' spool of Mil Spec 550 cord and make your own. The spool would probably run you like 30 bucks, and as long as you have a little bit of free time on your hands it is actually pretty fun

I've been checking reviews since yesterday and noe I'm between the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro and the Ultralight version.
I'm 6'1" and 160 pounds / 1.85 m 72kg
Will the ultralight version be big/resistant enough to sleep comfortably?
The only sellers that I can find that ship worldwide are selling the ultralight version for 7USD more, (62 vs 55). Do you think it'd be wise to just get the pro version for a cheaper price, even though I won't need the extra size and it weighs more? Or do you think having extra room will make it more comfortable?
I don't really care about the 7 dollars, I care more about the extra weight and potentially wasted space

No, that is called an underquilt.

If you try to use just a sleeping bag in a hammock you are not going to be adequately insulated because your body weight will crush the bottom insulation in the sleeping bag.

Generally I only use it in warmer weather, so the sleeping bag serves more as a blanket, but when I do get inside and zip the bag up, the hammock just kind of wraps around and makes a cozy cocoon.

My impression is that in a tent you are sort of "trapped" so if humans or wildlife decide to fuck with you it would be hard to defend yourself. Hay i havent read the rest of the thread but i have to go and i want to input.
I work as an outdoor Rec Guide full time and spend 100+ nights away from home. I've been in my hammock for a few years now. Its been great. Its a henessy with a new fly after a nasty night out. It doesnt beat a bed for comfort but its still a good nights sleep. I have mine because its light about 1.1kg with the new fly.

TLDR: I'm a pro, i use a hennesy

In a hammock you can at least use gravity to help you escape, as in if you need to cut your way out you can just cut the bottom a bit and slip through, in either situation you are pretty fucked though. There would be a slight chance that a bear or something wouldn't notice you or your scent in a hammock, and if you're gnarly you can hang it higher, unlike in a tent where you must sleep on the ground like another animal. Everyone should be storing there food away from their camp anyways if you're in bear country so this shouldn't really be an issue. Also my penis is most likely bigger than yours, get over it.

That isn't my set up in the picture unfortunately, but it is similar. I'll take some pictures when I go on my next trip. My hammock set up is in storage because I don't use it below temps of 32F.

I did not make my own tarp, my sewing skills are OK but the real trick is the chemical treatment used to waterproof the nylon and I don't wanna spend all that money on the chemicals only to screw it up.

So I was wondering about the usage of hammocks in winter conditions - not Alaska/Siberia freezing, but up until -10°C, normal winter in Europe.
In winter one lays in the tent; ground, sleeping pad, sleeping bag. In hammock I would think: Air, hammock, emergency blanket, sleeping bag. Would that suffice to not literally freeze my ass off?
I mean, there are many different opinions here, but with proper insulation and a good slleeping bag this should be no problem, ait?
Has anyone experiences with that? Or do I have a failure of thought?

I was sleeping in a hammock in ~50*F a couple nights ago with just a sleeping bag and I was freezing. As probably mentioned earlier, you lay on top of all your insulation, crushing it and rendering it useless. You really need a sleeping pad in anything under probably 65*F.

I've been out on a clear night with no moon and just the starlight on the snow was enough to see by. People in the city don't realize how bright stars are because the streetlights swamp them out.
