Pic related is a typical catch for me off the south coast of the north island, New Zealand. A butterfish and some pāua (abalone)

I've hunted in the Cozumel Channel while on vacation. Got a parrotfish. Was worried about sharks, and got to see my fear realized when a big-ass bull shark swam up to within 15-20 feet of us while guys had two big fish on their lines.

I actually bought a spear gun (band) and have hunted a little bit in the northern Gulf of Mexico, but it's a lot harder in that inferior visibility.

OP here that sounds freaky as. I'm yet to see a shark, I don't think there are many around where I dive, but further north around Auckland where the water is warmer there is a thriving population of bronze whalers which can get pretty aggressive.

What do you consider inferior vis? It varies here but can get up to 15m in summer. I'm happy with anything over 4m...

I do a fair bit of spearfishing in south-west Australia. The water is freezing af on the south coast.
I got a wobbegong once, dragged it out of the water with my dad with our bare hands. The skin is very tough so i had to shoot it straight through the head with a speargun.
I've never seen any dangerous sharks, even though there are lots of shark attacks in the south-west.
Lots of abalone, which is basically really small paua.
Do you go from a boat or the shore?

No money for spear fishing, but I tied some fishing strings to a stick that is holdable in hand and a hook 2 meeters down.
Just watched as fishes approach and pulled. Also had a toothpick-like thing tied to my swimsuit, so i coud string it to my body and have no need to go back to the shore when I cought something, because I would pierce a fish and tie it to a string.

How cold? It never gets above 18c here, more like 9 or 10 in the winter but its alright most of the year with a 5mm wetsuit. I'm saving for a boat but I just do shore dives atm. I live within walking distance of a good spot so I just lug all my gear out and back

I never really eat the fish I catch though so no clue what I would so with them after I spear em. I wonder what they taste like since all they eat is algae.

Spear a bit here on the gold coast, offshore on 7 mile and Palmy reef mainly.
Get some big Spanish Mac and Cobia
Lots of frign sharks though, dont seem to bother most guys that are decent speros but they still freak me out. Especially when swimming back from palmy reef dragging Spanish Mac.

For guns go Rob Allen anything... they are the shit, head and shoulders above the rest

I was looking at the rob allens but got a Freedivers 110 instead. Its another saffa make. seems like pretty good quality so far, the safety catch is a bit loose though.

Ya they are decent. Its $ to quality ratio, if I had less $ when I was looking I may have gone something different.
I went with the rob allen tuna 1300 and cant fault it apart from the price

It stays roughly 18 degrees year round in the southwest, gets really warm up north though. I only recently bought a 3mm wetsuit, so before I just swum with normal swimming clothes and it was freezing af. I was lucky to stay out long enough to get some fish sometimes lol.
Lucky you live near a good spot, I live in a city and there is a marine park all along the coast near where I live, so I can only spearfish when I go /out/.
