First time poster here,
Currently 18, living in UK, I finish college this year and plan to go on a gap year in January 2014 for 5 months with an amigo, starting in New Zealand, then onto Australia and Islands like Papua New Guinea and Fiji, before heading to SE Asia and finally China

If you know of any good places to hike/wilderness camp in NZ/Aus/PNG please dump them here

I've a friend who surfs this regularly who I'll be spending some time with so he's going to give me some info but literally anything you can advise me on or tell me would be appreciated thousands of times over

NZ is beautiful, I have been to the north and liked it but everyone i know says the south is better for mountians and outdoors things.

I have camped and traveled alot in Aus and the most usefull thing I have is a book which lists camp spots, there are many around and you can buy them at just about any book shop here. then you simply look at where you want to go and the campsites near by.

If you have a car, then a swag is a great investment.

99.99% of camping areas here are safe.

but PNG is pretty rough, I haven't been there but i have mates who work there and port morsbey etc...they drive around in armoured cars.

The other Anon is right Moresby is a world class shithole.
I went to PNG for a surf trip.
Contracted malaria and nearly died I still am a little fucked up years later. On the same trip a mate got fucked up majorly from a huge dose of ecoli poisoning.
There were four of us and everyone of us got sick, there's literally no infrastructure at all in the country so getting sick can cost you your life.

Then there's the people. To be honest although most islanders are great people and I mean real outright bros, politically PNG and Solomon Islands are the most dangerous places to go in the pacific. There's high crime, rascal gangs and just general shittiness.

For outside the town regions you're going to want some armed guides. I didn't think this was important until the village we stayed in was attacked by a neighbour village with spears and machetes- the guides with the guns were a real benefit.

Alot of this might sound like fantasy but its reality there. The nature of the place is beautiful mind blowing in fact, but you gotta prepare right for that country. Take lots of medicine with you.
