hey /out/,

How would you go about converting some farmland into a low maintenance wildflower meadow or the like.

I'd like to take about 3 acres farmland on my property and turn it into a sort of game bird habitat.

It is extremely simple. Don't mow or brushhog it from now on. If an invasive species like thistle or multiflora rose (in the states) or other thing appears, remove it and its root entirely ASAP. You may also need to remove trees occasional, if you really just want it to remain a meadow. Otherwise, you can simply leave it alone. The native flora that starts to grow will be the best possible types of plants you want to attract birds with. you may also cross-reference the birds with their migratory paths and research the plants they feed up on in those areas. Then if you are legally allowed to plant those things in your area you can do so in order to double your chances of attracting those species of birds.

wait, so i DONT brushhog it?

what do i do with the existing crops? I think they're soy beans? till them out?

Also, I was thinking about obtaining seeds directly from Pheasants Forever for the habitat.

You may have serious trouble getting anything else to grow there for around 2 seasons. This is because most soybeans (in the USA) are GMOs and have been sprayed with an herbicide that kills everything else except the GMO soybeans. If you know that no herbicides have been used then things will be far easier.

You can let it grow or till it in yourself. Either way you can seed the place with whatever local plant seeds you have. If you leave the soy plants then you might need to cross reference if the seeds you will plant can grow through them. If not, they mow them off/till them in before planting.
