Anyhoo I'd never bring a down jacket since it's totally useless when wet. The fleece + raingear is enough. I'd also never bring prepared food like sandwiches, but lots of dried shit. Also no rain cover, but a dry sack for inside the bag (trying to keep water out from the outside is futile). Also cameras are for faggots. And no GPS since I can nav. Also what do you drink hot liquids out of? I bring a big plastic mug always.

I bring the ground sheet for my tent just to keep to bottom of the tent from wearing out. It's probably overkill, but it can also serve as an emergency tarp in a pinch if something else fails.

It may be inexpensive, but it's clunky and heavy. I prefer going UL (my packs always are under 25lbs, even for weeklong trips) and milsurp would never accomplish that.

I had to use that shit in the military. It sucks. It's built to be treated like shit and not fall apart, but I don't treat my civy gear like shit so I can get away with lighter, nicer stuff. Military stuff is also mostly one-size-fits-all, where my civy stuff (bag, tent, pack, etc.) is sized for me.

You can build a makeshift tent with two tarps. I had an ultra light weight and a more heavy one. I just made an angular roof on the ground and threw the other one over, so it covered the open side. Works good enough. But I reckon the best thing would one of those water proof bags and to just lay down where you want to.

On the only one of my trips last summer when I weighed my pack beforehand, I took about 5 days' worth of food, as well as a DSLR and a 100-400mm zoom lens, my backpack weighed around 30 pounds, food, 2 L of water, camera, tripod, and fly-fishing equipment included.

I think one of the best ways to be frugal is to make your own gear and clothing.

I have made the following things for myself:
-cuben fibre rain shirt and pants
-cuben fibre rain mitts
-ripstop nylon hammock
-ripstop nylon stuff sacks of varying sizes
-alcohol stove and windscreen

Probably a few more things, but I am forgetting them.

My pack is actually pretty light my estimation is around 25 pounds in the begging of the trip when I have full food/water.

I would like to carry a snake bite kit because some times I hike in areas with rattlesnakes, but I need to research how effective they actually are versus a quick make shift turnicate. people that I hike with carry snake bite kits and medical stuff.

none of my gear is the best, I honestly just like getting into the wild. I don't need the nicest or most luxurious gear to enjoy myself.

-weigh everything, but especially your "big 4" (tent/shelter, pack, pack, and sleeping bag). you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on high-dollar tents to get your pack lighter. DIY gear is a cheap, and perfectly legitimate option. You can get a sewing machine from Walmart for like $80, and thru-hiker.com can supply you with UL materials (including high loft down and synthetic insulation)

FWIW, when I was in Boy Scouts, I used a backpack that weighed 7 pounds by itself, a tent that weighed 5 pounds, a sleeping bag that weighed 3 pounds, a pad that weighed 3 pounds, and I brought a change of clothes for every day. That's 18 pounds of gear, not including clothes!

I currently use a pack that weighs about 2 pounds, a sleeping bag that weighs 2 pounds (and is rated for warmer temperatures than my previous one), a shelter that weighs about 1.5 pounds, and a sleeping pad that weighs about 10 ounces. That's about 5 pounds for my big 4. I actually have some gear that is a little lighter, but this is what I'm most comfortable with.

Don't copy these gear lists until you know how to use this kind of gear, but you can emulate these gear lists with other gear that you're more comfortable with.

Duomid. I've done some projects: several bivies, synthetic 40 degree quilt, synthetic puffy pull-over, stuffsacks... I typically stick with nylon over cuben fiber. Check out thru-hiker.com and similar sites. They have kits you can buy if you're not up to starting from scratch.

I think I got that down myself - Pack, pad, tent, bag, food + bear canister (3-4 days), clothes (few), poles, nalgene, 2L water, filter pump, misc...all pretty light. Throw in 11lbs of 70m 9.8, set of (my) nuts, few slings, biners (D-wire gate and a couple of pear locking), rock shoes and I'm pushing 40-ish.

This is a heavy load, but im a big guy so fuck it.

I go camping/hiking a lot. Longest ive been out without resupplying is about 6 days. The only thing i would ever say you would need to spend a lot on is footwear and maybe a jacket. Too many gearfags on this board. UL stuff is usually fragile and overpriced. I wouldnt say milsurp is the best either, but fuck is it durable. And quite frankly, if going /out/side doesnt require you to have durable equipment, youre doing it wrong.

They fit different when loaded and any outfitter worth half their shit will make you walk around in the pack with weights in it before they sell it to you. Osprey fit best for me, $200.

If your tent leaks or your sleeping bag is too cold, you'll be miserable all night.

Ultrawides are for when you actually want the foreground in the shot, like you can see unartfully done in >>72817. And even if you are actually at the base of a mountain and want to take a picture of the whole thing, you can just stitch together a panorama of 4-6 shots at a longer focal length. I've done it, and you can get some super high resolution wide angle images this way.

40mm just happens to work out really well for Canon DSLR users wanting to take their camera backpacking because of the "pancake" lens available in this focal length. With a low profile lens like this, you can effectively eliminate bouncing from having the camera slung over your shoulder while you hike. If you think you can make use of this focal length, I'd recommend it for hiking.

Around neck and left arm, like a women's purse or something. I dunno, but I hiked 100+ miles over several trips last summer like that and didn't have any issues with discomfort.

I believe it is. With most lenses, the camera wants to bend forward. With a pancake, the DSLR just hangs there, with no forward torque. Try walking with just the DSLR body, no lenses on it.

it is pretty annoying. I would tighten the strap a bit if I was walking for longer. I kept it slung around neck and across my chest under an arm. The camera it self would be hanging off somewhere near my abdomen, bouncing around. Id alternate between letting it bounce for it little while, supporting the weight of the camera with my hand, or pulling the strap so the camera would bounce less. None of which were comfortable.

I need to finish off the pack with a knife, some paracord, sunglasses, packed meal, iodine tabs, a covered hammock and a mess kit, and i should be alright for an overnight, yeah? as long as I molle the hammock to the outside of my pack, there's more than enough room in this tiny thing for all that.

Thats one real complain about it.
Sure the mil rucks are heavier, but some people can autopilot.
IMO some military gear is good, not standard issue mind you, but civilian gear is lighter and more comfy.
