I'm not against wolf management, because culling the wolf population in certain areas is necessary, and starvation is a cruel death. That said, indiscriminate hunting can cause more harm than good in conflicts with humans. Because of the pack dynamic, the removal of an alpha is incredibly damaging. The remaining wolves of a pack can turn desperate and that can cause them to come into more conflict with people. I live in Wisconsin, and the state legislature just opened up a wolf season with quotas depending on different areas in the state (I think the season just closed). I'm torn because of it. I completely understand the conservation behind the idea, to ensure wolf management, but the majority of hunters don't give a shit: they either just want the chance to bag a wolf, or they think that a healthy wolf population would negatively impact state deer populations (there are too many damn deer regardless).

Anywho.
Both sides have logic behind this, yes predator populations are low to human interaction. But, they also need to be controlled to protect the prey population, livestock, and even property.

In Alberta, the most secure and stable natural areas are those with frequent hunting of both types, predator and prey. The national parks and protected areas actually have pretty unstable populations. Reason being number one is, unfortunately pretty racist, asian tourists. They bait wolves and bears to come closer to their vehicles and the highway. The feed them and such until the predators associate roadways with food, and humans as friends. This ends up with a lot of roadkill and the prey population exploding, because the predators are being killed off and predators frequent highways much more than deer.
In fact herds of elk are now big enough that they can barely be predated upon.
In areas where everything fears humans, the population is much more stable.
Hunting helps a fuck ton in resource management

If humans didn't use population control, the predator population would rise as they killed off the prey population, until there weren't enough prey to support the predators, causing the predator population to drop, which would cause the prey population to rise, and then things just keep going in a cycle. With human interaction, we try to keep both populations at steady and optimal levels for humans. Which means the highs and lows in population aren't as high if we didn't intervene. Plants hmm, if only i paid more attention in plant tax.
The only one i can think of at the moment is crawling juniper.
The berries are a favourite of ungulates during the late fall early winter months, high in energy and fat.
They take a huge hit in even lower population areas just cause their targeted more. Resource management guys are apparently seeing a decent decline of it throughout the past decade, its not near endangered or anything like that though.

What does this say about us humans? We are beyond the point of having predators and I don't think our population has done anything but rise in a good long while. I think humans are partially separate from the ecosystem now, do to how much we can control certain aspects of it. Where I live, coyotes have moved into the area due to the high deer population. In a couple of years there were 1,000s of coyotes fucking everywhere. Every night I'd here more than one pack howling like crazy. Then the deer population was reduced drastically because of the coyotes. Suddenly, there's barely any coyotes. Now the deer population is normal again and I very rarely ever hear coyotes.

I'm going to go farther and say that people against hunting are trying to project their own moral code onto a natural system which bares it no heed. There is no right to life in the natural world.
