Don't trust water filters, they get clogged and are not usable during the winter time because the cold temperatures can damage parts when the water inside freezes.

Your safest friend is a bandana to filter large particles and then using AquaMira or similar type chemicals to treat the water for micro-organisms.

If you do want a filter though, Sawyer, MSR, and Katadyn make the best stuff.

If you take good care of a water filter and don't go the cheap route, they work great for a long time. replace the filter whenever you have to is usually all you have to do. I usually carry chemical treatment options as an emergency option, but I definitely prefer a water filter. Nothing beats the taste of freshly filtered water from a clean lake

But yeah picture related is what I have been using for quiet a time now and I never had any problems with it.
Katadyn Mini is basically their smallest filter, you get half a liter for pumping one minute and the filter needs replacement after ~2000 liters.

if you're already heating the water then just boil it. It takes those tablets about 45 minutes to work properly, heated water will be near freezing again by then.

AquaMira comes in liquid form too, and it's a 20-30min wait for treatment no matter what temperature.

Possibly, but cold weather doesn't always mean snow either.

I also frequently go on trips where fires are prohibited in the back country so I have gotten in the habit of not making fires.

Not who you're talking to but chemical treatment is more reliable than filtering. If there isn't much turbidity then why sit there pumping when you can just drink your water, refill, treat, and get on your way.

I have a first need and it takes far longer than that to fill a nalgene. If you want to carry extra weight and waste your time pumping have at it.

Anytime I spend outside is not wasted. I'm not a kid anymore, I don't go inna woods to hurry, race or compete. I go to have a good time, maybe catch a few fish or pop a rabbit. Your MSR gadget is nice. I hope you like it. I've heard good things about them. I'll be using my pump for a while yet. And it really doesn't take very long to fill a nalgene bottle.

This is the Platypus GravityWorks. It comes in two sizes, I'm looking at the 2 liter size.

It has a 0.2 micron filter, just like this >>73993

But it weighs less.

And you don't have to pump.

And it produces more liters per minute.

And it costs less.
