Because you could learn many things by identifying rocks. There's an old science known as geomorphology, which contains a subset sometimes known as topomorphology, and that is about guessing the general topology of an area by looking at the rocks and the skyline. That's how maps used to be made before we had aerial photography.
And it fucking works.
It's quite handy once you're good at it. I can myself guess where slopes and paths will be simply by looking at my surroundings and rocks. The bad thing is, the best treaties on this subject are French.
