I want a dog that is primarily descended from caucasian mountain dogs but maybe some newfie or spitz or husky in there somewhere. The problem isn't distinguishing between separate breeds or even wanting a dog that is as purebred as you can find, it's about genetic drift.
look at europeans, they're diverse amongst themselves enough for there to be genetic diversity, but as a group they are unique enough to be grouped into a single race, like asians or africans. However, when you have a group like the jews who keep very much to themselves you ended up with inbreeding issues and a sickly population.
Think of it like races being the same as a kind of dog, like a herding dog or a hunting dog or a companion dog or whatever. Breeds would be comparable to the different kinds of dogs in those groups. Like you have white as a race, with subsets like germanic or eastern european or anglo saxon. They're similar in terms of general build, temperament, etc but different enough to still be distinct from one another. Likewise you have hunting dogs, with subsets like munsterlanders or golden retrievers or spaniels. Similar builds and temperaments, but different enough to be distinct from on another.
my sister pushes for the whole "just get a dog lol are dogs are the same with no differences u bigot" bullshit. Dog breeds or breed groups have similar characteristics and if you want a dog it makes sense to look for a dog that suits your needs. That's where breeds come in.
