just look around for an old 90's hardtail on ebay or craig's list. some of those frames are really nice and you'll have a killer setup for under 500. You can also find mtn bikes from bike shops on the lower end for 300 or less. Believe me, you really don't need those ridiculously expensive suspension bikes. I mtn bike all the time and using an older bike will only make you better at biking.

all my friends have spend $1000+ on mountain bikes for when we go ride trails in the hills. i use a bike i got for free, which cost its owner $200 from kmart. doesnt have suspension, but its built like a tank. i can keep up with my friends with ease

If you're in a decent-sized city, there's probably a bike co-op somewhere, and they'll usually have a work-for-a-bike program. You learn to be a bike mechanic and know the ins and outs of your own bike.

You probably don't ride too hard or too far then, or you've been lucky, and there's probably more wrong with your bike than you realize.

Those cheap ass department store bikes are usually made with the cheapest parts on earth, I bent the stem on one of those just riding over rocks on a flat easy trail, not even real singletrack. If you don't have a lot of cash you're way better off getting a used, quality bike instead of a new shitty bike.

I've been mountain biking for 20 years and I built all my current bikes up from a bare frames so I probably know a hell of a lot more than you. You're the one talking shit and giving bad advice based on a sample of one. I'm glad you're happy with your bike but sub-$400 bikes from department and toy stores are NOT going to be as good or as reliable as a good used 1990s hardtail or rigid mountain bike. Especially for real trail riding.

Walmart, K-mart, Sears, Target, Academy, etc. all carry brands of bikes that are now owned by Pacific Bicycle. Even Schwinn is owned by them. They are all pretty crappy Chinese bicycles.

The only decent bikes from Pacific Bicycle are the single-speed cruisers. Just be wary of the coaster brake, it's modeled after the Shimano E-type, but uses pretty crappy steel for the axle and brake shoes.

He probably means asphalt trails, in which case, that's what department store bikes are designed for. If you're going to ride over anything other than man-made asphalt trails that have objects over an inch tall that are uneven, you're going to have an incredibly shitty ride and you'll break your piece of shit from walmart apart in minutes.

If your budget is $500 or less, buy used, because MTN bikes at your LBS are going to use the same shitty parts that come with your walmart bike. You're going to need to spend around 1,000 to get something that can handle the job. Unless of course you're just riding on bike paths, streets and sidewalks.

The difference between a KMart bike new and a 1200-dollar Trek used is the difference between a new Chrysler PT Cruiser and a used BMW 3 Series. Yeah, they both work but there's one that will take years of use (the BMW) and one that won't (PT Cruiser). The simple fact is that quality material costs money, good steel and composite frames are very expensive to construct. Your claim that a bike that costs 6 times less to produce is just as good is a load of crap.

Now, the difference between a 1200 and 2000 dollar bike is pretty small overall, but KMart bikes do not fucking last and that's a simple fact. What happened to you is you happened to get a bike that was made better than the norm. Quality control has variation and you got the lucky end, but the vast majority of those bikes are not nearly so long-lived. The plural of anecdote is not evidence.

I bet every bike I rode when I was a kid came to our family for >$20.

I don't bike much now, but I rode a $1200 bike last summer and it was uncomfortable as fuck. Don't believe you need to spend a bunch of money on something as simple as two wheels, a chain, a frame, pedals, and seat.

Try kayaking if you have any water nearby. I find that much more interesting than riding, and it builds upper body muscles.

I'm not the guy you were talking to before. This is my trip and I've used it for a while. What I said is nothing to do with the KMart origin, it has to do with the 200-dollar bike thing. Your claim the the two are equivalent is ridiculous. Your only proof is your personal bike and that is not proof. I won't both explaining the Indusrial Engineering concepts that underly that, but suffice to say that the 200 dollar bike simply does not have the amount of cash necessary to pay for the quality materials and skill necessary to fabricate those. Sometimes, however, a particular bike gets made better than the rest by simple chance and you happened to buy one and are now claiming that as the basis of your argument. That does not stand up to scrutiny.

That said, a decent bike can be had for a lot less than 1000. The claim that a 1200-dollar Trek and a 200-dollar store-brand bike are equivalent is ridiculous. You can quit being mad, I'm not insulting your bike. I'm just refuting your argument.

As someone who has been mountain biking since the mid 90s, I agree with this.

And you can get '97 '98 '99 '00 Kona and Specialized hardtails for crazy prices. Just make sure you get someone who knows what they're doing to give 'em a good check and you'll be fine.

If you're in the US you should check out Mturk. It's not a bad way to make a couple extra dollars. Starting out sucked but I eventually started making about 15 dollars every 2 hours that I normally would have spent watching TV. I don't use it much anymore but I bought a lot of gear with it.

Go on craigslist and find used, old bikes from decent brands. They have lifetime warranties. No start building it up slowly. First, take it completly apart and learn the name of every single part, degrease the entire bike, reapply the oil and grease (make sure to apply the right grease to the right parts), and rebuild it. Once that's done, the first thing you want to replace is the front fork (assuming you bought a hardtail which you should have since you clearly cant afford a full sus bike). Try looking for a used on on pinkbike or a new cheap one from chainlove. Next thing you want to upgrade is the rear mech or maybe even the breaks. Make sure the bike you get is compatible with disk breaks. Get some cheap avids or shimano starters.
