op here, I am not trying to stir any shit. I am just wondering what are some good firearms that are lightweight that could protect you against Grizzly's and cougars. not implying every single one is going to attack me.

12gauge shotgun or bear spray
handguns dont do shit because predators are too fast, you´ll never hit in life or death situation, shotgun you wont have to aim, same with bear spray

Hang your food from a tree to keep bears away.
Do your cooking away from your tent.
DON"T KEEP FOOD IN YOUR TENT.
Be aware of animals around you when you're hiking.
Don't get between a momma animal and her kids.
Use bear bells if you're in a bear-prone area.
If you stumble across a marijuana patch or still operation, GO THE OTHER WAY.

It's pretty simple stuff. No need to bring firearms with you.

I hate when people say this. Shotguns have a lot less spread than people think they do.

A shotgun loaded with 00 Buckshot or Slugs should be a reasonable choice, but stay away from any Remington shotguns.

Are never a threat unless like any animal, you are threatening their offspring in some way.
Any bear can be nasty after emerging from hibernation.

Firearms are never required, be one with nature, you are a top predator for fuck sakes!
A small can of pepper spray will work if you are worried, most bears will dummy charge you at most and cruise right by off into the woods away from you.

Taking children or small pets into the bush with you is another matter, as is packing food into your tent, or leaving scraps around the camp fire.

Even the dreaded wolverine is not a threat unless caught in a leghold trap.

Go with a .357. They're manageable and light and for the people that claim a .44 is necessary...yeah no. If you don't make a shot to the brain then you're dead either way. Most bears won't know you punched a hole in their heart until you've been mauled for a good 30 seconds. Shotguns suck because no one fucking walks around, shotgun in hand. If you don't have that gun within about half to one full second access time, you're dead anyway. And no, you still have to aim shotguns. People who say otherwise do not shoot shotguns.

A .357 with a 4 or 5 inch barrel shooting hot load .357 is going to do the job fine. If you wanna blow the cash then you could get an ultralight .357, but I find ultralight handguns tend to get a LOT of felt recoil due to the low mass. Personally, if I didn't already have one, I would get a Taurus .357 and load it up with some Buffalo Bore JHP rounds.

All that said, I would rather have bear spray because it's lighter and does the job. I also don't have to deal with the legal bullshit that comes from shooting an animal without a license.
