Condor Bushlore Advice, pls halp

Hey /out/, I need your help!

So last night I ordered myself a Condor Bushlore 2011 (pic related) off of Amazon for $33.42, and I had a few questions about it.

I know that it come with a "factory blade" edge, obviously meaning it has a dull edge and needs to be sharpened. However, I do not have much experience with sharpening large, fixed blade, sheath knives. I'm usually sharpening small EDC folders with a handheld sharpener i'll post of pic of. So my questions are....

Should I find a friend that will sharpen it, or should I do it myself?

If I do it myself, what method should I use to sharpen it?

If I can use the sharpener I have, (posting it in a sec) will it work well for the knife?

And my last question... IS THIS EASY TO MESS UP?!

do it yourself or are you some kind of pussy

any will do, personally I use whetstones but, anything you have will do, what makes you think a fixed blade is any different from any other blade

i cant see shit in that pic so Im just gonna say, prolly not, I dont have good experience with sharpeners like that

anything you mess up in the sharpening process you should be able to correct by applying another correct sharpening
so yes, you can mess up, but nothing irreversible

That's going to be the best edge it ever has.
How often it requieres sharpening depends on how hard the steel is. You should search the internets before you even touch that thing with a stone.

Not if you know how to sharpen a knife worth a damn. I've never been shipped a knife I could shave with (even from Benchmade), but I've definitely sharpened knives to that level before.

Hand sharpening is sure way to fuck up an edge permanently if you don't know what you are doing, OP obviously doesn't.

I had a book on sharpening that was pretty thick. If its a quality blade, don't touch it until you know what you are doing. You should also practice a lot on another knife before.

You simply cannot beat a machine sharpened knife. It's different than sharpening your average kitchen knife.

You get a good whetstone with a course and a fine side. You typically push the blade edge first making sure the entire blade is being sharpened. The stone itself can eventually become warped so make sure you are suing the entire stone...I think those are the basics.

The angle is also critical but you can feel it when the edge is laying flat on the stone, you don't want to rehape the angle because its cut for the particular grade of steel.

How dense are you? A poor sharpening job isn't irreversable, it's no different from dulling it from use, easily corrected with sharpening. It's 1075 carbon steel, something that's very workable, even with rudimentary means. OP I say get it, the hardest part for you is to set an edge on the unsharpened part, I believe the 2011 model there's about half an inch just above the scales left unsharpened. One way or the other the only way you'll learn is to do it.

Watch a few videos on youtube on knife sharpening - there's plenty out there that will give you the info you need.

You can use sand paper on a hard surface instead of stones if you want (cheaper if you have no stones). Work up through the grits.

If it has a convex, you can put the paper on a mouse mat and sharpen that way. I've used the palm of my hand for smaller knives with convexes.

I also got a combination whetstone with a coarse and a fine side. If you want to sharpen the convex grind which it comes with, that's not gonna be easy.
What I did (since I don't like convex grinds for an all-purpose knife anyway, too hard to maintain) was lay the knife with the grind flat on the coarse side and go to town on the stone until the bevel was completely flat, then increase the angle just a bit and put a secondary bevel on it (this makes resharpening in the field easier cause you don't have to take off as much material to get it sharp).
When I was done, I used the fine side of the stone in the same angle I ground the secondary bevel with, and finished it off on a piece of leather with polishing paste to get shaving sharpness.
I've sharpened smaller knives with a stone about 10 times before I did that.
If you fuck it up, you can always try again, each attempt removes about a quarter millimeter of blade width, but you've got a lot to work with. It's easier than it sounds, but takes patience and a steady hand.
If you want to get into sharpening by hand, I'd recommend buying a Mora Utility (one of the cheapest carbon steel knives with decent size) to practice with:

A tutorial would be useless, since entering "knife sharpening tutorial" in youtube will show you all you can learn without actually doing it.

It's not something where explanations actually help. They have their place when it comes to reshaping the bevel, but that's something you don't even look for unless you're already experienced.
