General trespassing thread...

Imma swim an abandoned quarry...on private property...and then do some urban exploration of the abandoned stone cutting factory just up the road. Just got a gas mask for this purpose

How bad is a trespassing charge in Indiana? Is there a fine? Jail time? Or would they just ask me to leave?

It really depends on who is accusing you and what you did on the property. If youre very polite if you got caught and you didn't do any damage to the land, chances are youll be fine. Just do your best not to look like a sketchy guy and you will be scott free 99% of the time.

The biggest thing people get in trouble for is not the trespassing charge, but the vandalism charge. A lot of cops will estimate the slightest damage to crazy high amounts of money. Here in California, $800 is the limit before it becomes a felony. So if you are trespassing an area with a high risk of getting caught, dont be an idiot and destroy stuff for shits and giggles.

http://www.ai.org/legislative/ic/code/title35/ar43/ch2.html has the relevant laws; it looks like it varies between a misdemeanor and a Damned Serious Felony depending on what you're trespassing on and what you do while there.

Better to not get caught.

You should probably just go do all of that and just be careful instead of worrying about it so much. Of all the farmers land and forest trusts, quarries, abandoned quarries/factories/institutions I've been to, the odds of being found are very slim. Especially anything outdoors. Go do it, keep an eye open, and have fun. Not too hard...
