I don't get why so many people hate on the taste, though. It's loads better than iodine.

I also have an MSR water filter, but I don't use it much since I mostly hike in mountains with good-tasting springs.

Been using The Sawyer for some time now, although you might consider making a couple of after-market pieces for it.

Left to right:
Tornado tube- will allow you to back flush with a clean bag or bottle.
Top off a used bottle with the end capped- This will allow you to transport the device and it will not leak into your pack
Top- The top that comes with it is a two piece and the clear plastic protector over the nipple can get lost grab a one piece off another bottle.

The part to prevent leaking has a couple of how to vids on you tube.

I would highly recommend Chlorine Dioxide. Relatively cheap. The droppers last a long time. And really there is little to no taste difference (if you use the right amount). It is also very good in the chemistry that happens. Environmentally friendly too. Hadn't used them till i went to Peru for a month and a half three years ago. Wouldn't go back to using chlorine or iodine and simply don't feel a filter is worth it (i do use a alright one in case of sediment). Not all that convinced by the steripens, however i have never used one.

I've tried a few but the First Need by General Ecology is the *ultimate* purifier. Chemical-free and will remove absolutely everything. Pretty good flow rate too. SRP $120

Everything is okay for short periods, like one or two weeks. Iodine is apparently the worst for you. Chlorine you can use for longer periods. Silver chloride seems to be popular suddenly; I don't know what the guidelines for that stuff are.

Unless you're doing a week long camp in the middle of no where, I don't see the need for all of this expensive gear. For short hikes I bring a bottle of water and usually leave it in the car to finish when I get back. For longer, I fill my camelbak. For camping, you could bring a few gallon jugs per person, or boil water from the nearest stream if you're really paranoid about even running water.

I haven't used the lifesaver, but I can give you some primary differences right off the bat.

Pros for the pump setup:
Pump water into whatever bottle/bag/camelbak you want, including water for other people
Filter up to 13,000 gallons
Clean the filter after your trip so it's ready to go every time
The pocket weighs half what the lifesaver weighs, even less for some models
takes up less space when not in use

The only downside I can see for the lifesaver is that it's pretty bulky, other than that it looks like a pretty good setup if you're filtering water for yourself and don't need to fill up bottles for 4 of your companions.
