-Take a lesson before you start to develop shitty habits. They're hard to break.
-Buy a fly-tying kit and start tying your own flies. Otherwise, find a place to buy them cheap online. I understand that buying pretty flies from a fly shop is supporting the business, but most people, beginners especially, don't want to shell out $2 per fly. You WILL lose flies. Probably 4-6 per trip if you're doing it right. Sometimes they just fall apart after catching enough fish.
-De-barb your hooks. Seriously, the barb will just give you a false sense of security and will actually make the hook harder to set. You don't need barbs when you're flyfishing anyway.
