What's a good spread to put with tortillas while backpacking? Meaning it cant spoil and such.

Bonus points for no peanut butter.

I was thinking 2 packs of tortillas, and some sort of add-water-meal would go well too.

I don't think weight saving is his goal. Most likely, he picked tortillas because they taste good, are moderately high in calories and can be stored for a long period of time without refrigeration.

I usually put it on crisp bread or crackers, but maybe instant hummus would work on tortillas.
Just add water, and oil if you have it stir and you have spreadable hummus

One issue with spam is that it's only about 85 calories per ounce. Technically less if you're bringing the can. A small pouch like that wouldn't be too bad though, and it's pretty difficult to get protein in a portable, calorie dense format.

I like tuna packed in oil (Starkist yellowtail in extra virgin olive oil). Only about 190kcal, but it tastes good and get you 18g of protein. Last trip I took two of them and had them with couscous and some Knorr something-something-noodles.

I am having to look into more calorie heavy options. Between one of these meals, a mountain house and rtrail mix only get about 1500kcal a day. On a weekend trip that is no biggie, but looking at doing some 100+ mile stuff this fall, will need to keep the calories up for that.

Speaking of lightweight food, what's the lightest way to make coffee while out?

Usually I just pack away a kettle to heat water in, and a French press to brew in, but I'm thinking there must be some way to combine them. Ideally it'd be a French press or perc that could be heated over an open flame, but you might burn the coffee.

It's not like these two things are even that heavy, but I feel compelled to streamline the stuff I take with me, and minimize, as it were

Well damn, I've never seen one of these. Pretty cool, but I'd still be carrying the kettle. I think I'd buy something like a metal filter for it as well. Overall cleanup on this thing would be much easier than the French press though.

Cuban coffee maker might do the trick for you. Water goes in the bottom part. There's a stem that you put your coffee in, heat forces the water through the stem and into the top container.

anyhow, i don't know what the availability is the the US, but i would bring some Orifo soft-packs with mackarel in tomatosauce or some paté (really i use a lot of stuff from the national MRE, the contents are incredibly high quality in ours vs. most other countries)

Hell ditch the ramen and oatmeal and you can go without any cooking stuff.

Add in pop tarts, candy, and other trail snacks and it seems solid.

cheese is underrated. cheese and bread/tack has been the hardmans food for a long time. OP can make some quesadillas with a block of cheddar. good tortillas are actually just delicious on their own and just need a steaming for culinary perfection. salt and pepper should be in your kit regardless. you can also make a rudimentary tortilla soup if you carry chicken stock. they would be considered slick dumplings then, used to add heft and sustenance to broths

they get crumbly so you will need to bring oil to reconstitute them to usable.

However:
Flour tortillas will stay good for quite a while in your pack. use parchment paper and a few paper towels and separate them and they wont get stuck together from humidity of being in a plastic bag. just burp the tortilla bag.

stuffings? crushed ramen with underwood chicken spread mixed with a pouch of chicken. and a pack of mayo.

best way I found to makeup the calorie deficit is with honeybuns (hostess or w.e. you can find at the gas station) still the best price to calorie to weight ratio ever. I think it's 120-140 cal per ounce.

yes. sniggers can melt though, but the texture and inclusion of peanus and chewables makes it way more satisfying, and with protein.
