There is no such thing as a "best knife", there is only what works best for you, sure some traits are more desirable in a blade than others but that changes from one situation to another so there can never be a best knife, find what works for you in your situation and move on.

And I don't think it would be practical (or legal) to be breaking the sound barrier in something like a fighter jet. Shit gets so messed up once you break the sound barrier that it would never make it far without refueling.

Basically look at the thing you want done then find the most commonly used knife for the task

Carving? Get a carving knife. Skinning? Get a dedicated skinning knife like those used in the meat processing plants

if we are talking just a fun trip to the woods for a bit of fun and practice i would bring the mora or the bushlore, in a sort of fantasy survival, i had to go on the "Alone" show kinda thing i would bring the ESEE, but on second though i would consider the Mora classic, i bought two with the expectation that it would break under stress because it is not "muh full tang" but, to be honest ive put the Mora through atleast as much as the Condor if not more and its just smiled back at me and kept on chucking, the ESEE 6 does have one fairly major advantage over the condor in a longer term scenario, the relative thinness of the blade and the length actually enables it to make shingles, which is lovely for bowdrill, but if one really had to hunker down, you could hypothetically make a propper roof, hypothetically of course

I hate this question because it doesn't have a real answer because there is no "best" knife, it depends on your budget, intended use, area where you live, preference on materials etc etc. Be specific OP, go to every detail of what you want because opinions vary and there's no objectively right answer, for example to me a perfect knife is a puukko with a 3.5" blade, for someone else it's a thick survival knife with a 8" blade and all tac'd out.

ESEE Junglas is one of the best choppers I have ever come across.
Puukkos and Woodlore knives are excellent general use knives. But are mediocre hunting/skinning blades.
Winkler Hunting knife is one of the best hunting knives I've used.

Carbon blade likes oil. Some oil on a rag and wipe across, NB the grind is intentionally rough so it retains oil. Oil film visible in the form of tiny rainbows when held against the light. No rainbows => should re-oil.

I've never heard such nonsense about an intentionally rough grind to retain oil - by that logic it'd retain water and grime and anything else by equal measure - if you're tlaking about the sides of the blade then I can guarantee you it's ground to that grit within cost/manufacturing constraints nothing more, as for the edge itself even a toothy edge isn't going to be rough enough to retain oil, kek.

I'm gonna buy an ESEE 6 for exactly the same reason. It seems like a decent size for a do-it-all which is the kind of knife i like, especially when wheit is an issue and i don't want to be carrying a puukko as well as a large leuku or camp knife

Reminds me of my trusty box cutter. In my pocket erryday for the past 2.5yrs. Except for the couple of weeks when I left it at a gas station and lost it. Saw it sitting in one of the drawers with a bunch or random shit and snatched it back.

Thunb stud fell off and there is barely any paint left on it but it still works. I purposely leave a dull blade on there because it cuts open shrink wrap fine but doesn't slice my hand open as easily.

ah okay then, well id recomend practicing getting the movement right on a leather belt instead of sandpaper, less damage that way, a good trick is to color in the edge with a marker, that way you can see when you wear it off that your hitting the right spots

lay knife on edge
rock knife forwards until blade bevel touches paper
pull straight back on the straight edge
on the tip (curve) you need to pivot to follow the curve, NOT lift your elbow.

Most important is a consistent angle and an appropriate angle - one where you're actually hitting the bevel.

it's not about being clumsy it's about being able to visualise what you're doing in relation to what the blade is doing.

Lanksy system is good and all, bit expensive, but IMO I value the skill of free hand sharpening because ultimately it's much more flexible.

A lot of guys do custom piggyback sheaths that hold a 6 and 3 which looks really cool but I feel like I'd get sick of that shit slapping my leg after a while.

I have kind of been thinking that is there really a point in having a super expensive knife? For example, for the price of a really expensive knife, lets say 200 euros, you could get maybe 4 more basic knifes. Of course the expensive knife will probably be reliable and awesome, but is it really worth it? You can always carry a backup too in case that your main blade breaks. For example, I have a leatherman supertool 200 that can act as a backup knife. Of course it's nice to have a good blade you can rely on, but there's still a change of losing it so if you were to trust your life on a knife you should probably have a backup knife or plan anyway.

On a side note, why do some people get folding knifes for going /out/? I get that folders are useful for EDC because they take up less space when folded, but is there an actual benefit for /out/ purposes, since when going out you are probably carrying a backpack of some sorts and you can always carry the blade on your belt. I'm not trying to mock folders, I'm just curious about what benefit one would have over a fixed blade other than the space required.

I used a Buck 110 folder for the first seven years without a problem and I still carry it as a back up, now I use a Mora (don't judge me) instead because my friend had one and it worked so well I got one, and they are cheap as hell to buy, anyway back to the Buck, it worked just fine and I never knew I had to have a fixed blade so I didn't, I just got on with shit and did what I needed to do.

It is full tang with a moulded rubber handle. There are 2 grinds on the blade, the majority of the blade is a 34° angle for heavy chopping, and there is a 5cm section with an angle of 25° near to the handle for carving and other small tasks. Fantastic design if you ask me. The hole in the end of the blade is a manufacteuring practicality; it helps in the process of shaping and straightening the blade, although i suppose you could think of your own uses such as hanging it up by a hook/nail/branch/peg or even lash it to something to make a makeshift long billhook although i wouldnt have thought it would be very practical
