Hello /out/ can I have a sleeping bag thread!

I am looking for a good sleeping bag, and want to know what other people use innawoods, what their experience has been, what they reccommend. Try to consider all factors: price, weight, durability, practicality, how it has held up, the size which it can be packed down to, etc.

Seems one of the few situations where milsurp is ok.

You might also like to tell us where you are & where you go. You'll need a different bag for Trondheim than you will for St Kitts

True, I am thinking about heading down the California coast, starting in a couple months. Will then head through mexico, Guatamala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, all the way down to Argentina. That is the plan at least.

The sleeping bag works by dead air space for insulation.
The part you lay on has no dead air space because your laying on it.
The sleeping bag does little to insulate against the ground.
The sleeping mat insulates against the ground and increases comfort as well.
The high end sleeping bag will not have insulation on the bottom side.
The high end sleeping bag will have pocket/channel to slide in your sleeping mat.
The pocket keeps you centered on the sleeping mat and not rolling off throughout the night.
The blow up sleeping mat feels sort of like sleeping on pool raft but does well at smoothing out the feeling of rough ground.
The blow up sleeping mat folds down to nothing.
The self inflating sleeping has foam blocks in it that expand when you open the valve and therefore sucks in air.
The self inflating sleeping mat does not fold down as small.

For these reasons, I ended up going with a Big Agnes sleeping bag and a Big Agnes blow up mat. The bag compresses very small but is warm and the mat folds down to the size of a Coke can. I don't have to have anything strapped to the outside of my pack and I sleep very warm and comfy.

Went to REI today to look around, looked at the "REI Flash" rated to 32 fahrenheit, 2 liters packed down, 800 rating down, and 250$. Great size for me too, i slide right into it. What do you folks think?

Also, I have a question about sleeping bag usage. Where do you keep your arms when you sleep, and how does that change in a sleeping bag? When I sleep in a bed, my arms are going everywhere all the time, under the pillow, spread eagled, curled into my chest, etc, and when i sleep in a sleeping bag, i feel constricted and sometimes get bad sleep. Do I just need to get used to sleeping with my arms by my side? How do you folks do it

Your standard $9 walmart blue foam sleeping pad is bulky but performs fine.

As for sleeping bags, if you're willing to consider a quilt and have access to a sewing machine, making your own is a lot easier than you might think. Climashield can pretty much be sewn in between two pieces of nylon and used as a quite warm blanket with no further work.

I'll rephrase:

I am on a budget. I would like a recommendation on a decent sleeping bag that won't cost me over $60 USD. My planned usage would be for the spring and summer with temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit (sp?) at the lowest.

I just use a cheap foam pad and a wool blanket it doesn't scratch or irritate me during the night because I have a sweatshirt and pants on. The whole thing costs like 30 some odd dollars. Rustic inspired

I've been eyeing wool blankets for a trip around the warmer areas of Europe.
What's the typical warmth rating? Would I be okay getting one that's under $30?
Do they compress as small as a 3-season sleeping bag?
Should I only go for 100% wool?

Why don't people understand that, when they ask these questions, none of that can be evaluated without knowing what you want to use it for?

There is no "always best" sleeping bag, tent, backpack, knife, or most other tools. You get the tool for the job.

biggest advantage of down: comfy
biggest advantage of synthetic: inexpensive

summer bags are lightweight. you can "pimp" it with various covers and inlets. you can wear micro-fibre-underwear to adjust to add more isolation.

summer (synthetic) sleepingbags are easier to compress. they need less room in your rucksack.

look for models form the previous year. they are cheaper.

Normally they just go at my sides. On nights when I use a sleeping bag, I normally have been exercising all day, so falling asleep is easy in any position.

Yup, this is the most important trade-off.

Go down if you are sure you can keep it 100% dry, because it will be smaller/lighter. Otherwise synthetic is the only option.

Try anything Suisse and Coleman, if you're looking for cheap. Suisse has some 30% off sales on Amazon and sell some "ultralight" stuff if you're into that. The only problems I've seen with them are that you have to be careful with the zipper and they're cheap (But, that should be obvious, I guess).

Anons above had some good ideas with the milsurp or milgrade although they are HEAVY, you could also check amazon for the Modular Military Sleep System, look for the green patrol bag, which is quite light and it's rated from 30 degrees to 50 degrees. Shouldn't cost you more than 25-30 bucks.

I recently got one of these military modular sleep systems. They are the shit especially for the price. That Gore-Tex bivy it comes with is so god damn good. I usually just us the bivy and the green patrol bag and im plenty warm.

The civvy one I'm looking at "might" be waterproof, but I'm usually in a tent so it doesn't matter. Only thing is its so much roomier than the milsurp bags and much more comfy, not to mention a third of the price.

I still have about two months to ponder this dilemma.
