For those of you who are not atheists (perhaps even agnostic)

do you feel closer to God, or some form of creator/higher power/whatever you believe when you are in nature alone?

Do you like to read your Bible/Quran/whatever in the woods?

I find nature too beautiful and complex not to belive in a god.

I am a Philosophical Taoist/ zen. It just sort of happened when I was spending alot of time outside hiking. I then read the Tao Te Ching and it all came together. Don't agree with all of it, but its a wonderful book on natural law. I think alot of us are kinda like that.

Hey...
I'm an atheist but the most trouble I had when I officially came to the conclusion that I was, in fact, an atheist, was trying to explain that feeling you get when you're out in the thick of it.

Indeed, I do feel something that I would have described as 'spiritual' when I am in the woods or under the stars or just outside away from people.

I have my ideas about that now that don't necessitate a religious belief, but I figured I'd give my (hopefully) inoffensive two cents.

I'm not a religious guy, but I feel a connection with nature (now bear with me, it's not spiritual hippy nonsense). I'm pretty scientifically-minded, and I'm really into biology. In particular I like to think about evolution and homologous structures. A man and a bat both have 5 fingers. We all came from the same place, and we're all cousins. Trees are alive too. The way I see it, the earth came about by chance, but all the living things we have act according to a purpose they have, and that's led to the life we have today.

I see it as immensely beautiful, and when I'm innawoods I feel connected to the water, the sky, the plants, the rocks, the bugs, the birds, etc. I even feel that death wouldn't be too terrible, as the beautiful world will go on without me. It's not religious, but it sure makes me feel at peace with the world.

And yes, I think that Nature as in Mother Nature is great, and I often imagine the whole ecosystem (with me in it) as a whole, everything fits to place. Being one with the woods is a spiritual experience for me, every time.

And this is why I don't like hunting threads here or anywhere (even though I accept the necessity and usefulness of hunting).

But then again, going out with a firearm just to shoot some animals then go home isn't really fair or nature-loving in my book, it's a selfish, unnecessary act. But most things humankind does is, so I'm not upset about it. Also I deeply respect people who hunt using traditional tools, like a hand-made wooden bow.

What do you imagine a non-created nature would look like?

We should expect to find ourselves on massive round rocks, due to gravitational accretion. If we evolve there it would have the conditions for life; moisture (and so bodies of water), clouds (water vapor), rain, and of course plants consuming this water and for gas exchange. We should expect mountains due to tectonic activity as the core remains molten, rainbows due to the refractive index of humid air, basically everything we actually do see when we go outside.

Thats probably not what he means. The beauty of nature is so sensationally overwhelming that it reminds us of our conciousness, and makes us question the existence of our "soul", so it makes us feel closer to God, "the spirit realm", the "soul" etc, and the mere communication and expression of such an idea is evidence for a connection between the physical and the spiritual, the existence of solipsism is another example of this.

You can be an atheist and still believe in a soul, the idea of atheism has nothing to say about the existence of the non-material.

But respect for other believes are important, but they are also very personal. Fear of death is though maybe the big factor that makes people cling on to the idea of everlasting life. I'm an atheist, but also a biology major and find the interconnectedness of everything in the biosphere to be really humbling/disturbing (because of how we're fucking it up) and find untouched innawoods/desert/wherever to be very surreal, beautiful, and calming. The closest I can get to "spiritual" I'd say. I just feel at home,and more like a human. Makes me want to give up modern life more and more and just go, you know?

I guess what I'm closest to would be pantheism.
The way I see it, people the world over who are in organized religions see everything natural as being caused by god, such as hurricanes. "Oh, the hurricane came because god sent it". I believe that this is evidence that the real god of the world is nature, because it dictates our every day lives and nature is the last thing we are still afraid of as humans. We still fear disease, we still fear disaster, and we still fear being lost in the wild with nothing.
Moving on from that, I'm not sure *what* I believe at the moment. I revere nature as a great god, but I'm not really sure what I think about other topics like animals, trees, plants and things like that. Right now, basically what I believe in involves becoming connected with nature by being in the wilderness, deer especially stag being special and the embodiment of nature, cairns being a sort of shrine that one can build in places that call to them (sacred groves of sorts), celebrating the equinoxes, solstices, and a few other things, the sun is your guardian and the moon is your guide, and the stars represent the wilderness and everything wild. At one point I went to the top of a huge hill, the biggest one around, and I lay down in the grass beneath the clouds. I meditated for about an hour, and this was after a big run. I did some meditative breathing with my eyes closed and I was lying on some grass, and I felt this incredible presence around me, almost like there were people all around me. I'm not really sure what to make of that.

Really I have no idea what to believe. None of these beliefs are set in stone or written down somewhere, I just believe these things and I'm not really sure if I will always believe them. I'm reading into other religions and now I'm considering looking into Taoism from this thread. I also think that the idea of being "manly" is really interesting from a religious standpoint, sort of like in Japan they have "budo" which is a religious warrior code involving honor. I kind of already follow that philosophy, that you have to do things you don't want to and be tough and manly. (2/2)

Athiest here, I feel much closer to a higher power in the woods, its called death. You don't experience the presence of death anywhere quite like innawoods. Sure its scary when your car crashes into a post or you almost drown in your pool, but with that comes knowing you will be found and will be remembered. Innawoods its different when a bear stumbles into your camp, or a big cat screams from just out of site, your only guarantee is that you might be able to fill ot with holes, before you disappear from this world alone and forgotten

I get an overwhelming feeling in the woods, but I'm not sure I equate it to a religion. I am having a hard time thinking of words to describe it, but its almost like a sence of belonging. It comes from knowing I need to fill this niche, if I try to fill that one I will die. We don't have this form of structure in society.

It also comes from knowing you are responsible for your actions. If you try climbing that ledge and fall twisting your ankle, that's your fault. There is no other place in the world were this level of responsibility is present.

The final reason is the one that I simply cannot describe. Its the feeling you get looking at the stars knowing they are no longer there. Its also the feeling you get watching a mother deer nurse her fawn or an eagle catching a fish. I can't describe it, but it shakes me to my core when it hits.

Spending a month traveling a distance which could be covered by a plane in a few hours or a car in a couple of days is pretty humbling. That "I did this" feeling you get when looking down from a mountain top makes me think of all of the other things the rest of humanity and I are capable of.
