Only two types of fishing I have experience with enough to recall anything.
Catfish you literally just throw the bait out, have some heavy test line, and sit around and drink beer until you catch something. It's not much work to put in, just watching. Bass, you're going to be reeling out, waiting about 5-10 seconds, reeling in, reeling out, waiting, reeling in... more work and I think it's more fun, but I've had less success and it seems more dependent on outside factors. Catfish will sit in a hole and eat if food gets close.
Fun fact: you can actually forego using a bobber, by taking a thick blade of grass, spitting on it, and folding it on your line. When you see the blade of grass moving, you're ready to rock and roll. Also, when you catch something, don't immediately jerk back until you feel a solid tug. little fish will nibble and try to take your bait. Big fish will pull and you'll feel the difference. Then pull it after a few seconds, hard, so the hook embeds deeply. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. And cat have big "whisker" fins, that will stab the fuck out of you. It hurts like a bitch, so put your hand underneath their side fins to avoid that. They also have a slime coating on them that your hands will rub off and they'll probably die from infection if you throw them back in. So if you're catching cat, eat 'em, because they're gonna die anyways.
